I am still trying to knock down my husband's gt. grandfathers brickwall without much success, and wonder if someone could answer a query for me.

I am looking for John Charles PETERS, who I thought was born in Devonport, Devon on 11.8.1856. This date was obtained from a list of Navy personnel at Kew (not by myself). From the 1891 and 1901 Censuses I have ascertained that this date appears to be correct in line with the ages stated. However, I cannot find his birth in 1856 or 1857 on 1837online. I found an obituary in our local paper (in Kent) which gives his age as 85 in 1938 which would suggest he was born 1853/54. I have looked again today on 1837online and have found a John Charles PETERS on the last qtr. of 1854, with registration district of Stoke D. which I assume is Stoke Damerel.

Would it be likely that someone born in Devonport (this is stated on the Censuses) would be registered in Stoke D? It's the only likely candidate that I can find, not having anything else to go on at the moment.

Hi Glenys, Stoke Damerel and Devonport are really one in the same, Devonport is the town but Stoke Damerel is the parish
