help|I don't know if I am allowed to ask this question and will defer to the moderators to arbitrate.

I subscribe to Ancestry only because when I started on this quest it was the only family history information site that I had heard about. I now know that others exist and my question is to those of you who no doubt subscribe to other sites and perhaps several is do they offer anything vastly different or are they better or is it just a matter of personal choice?

Hello Barbara,

This topic has been discussed in the past and is really down to a matter of personal chice.

Have a read of the different threads here (http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43) and you will see the differing opinions.

Whatever your choice, make sure that you do not spend money unless you have to and try before you buy! ;)

(Meanwhile, I have moved the thread over to the forum highlighted above...)

You will probably get many different answers.
It's horses for courses (or vice versa?) so to speak.
From personal experience I liked A.... the best as it had the content and ease of use.... put in a name and date and up it comes.Romp through the censuses and all sorts.
I also used one called Br.... Orig....s Useful in many ways. and now I am on FMP but do not think I shall renew. I liked A.... the best of those I've tried.
There are so many and if money was no object I'd subscribe to several incl the G....ologist.
Can you do without any? Yes probably. I have heard that the Nat. Archives has the censuses on line . There are a lot of sites out there that are free and very good. genuki being one. M

It's very much a personal choice, but also defined by where your ancestors were. I'd find it hard to manage without Scotlands People, for example.
