I have just discovered from my Great Grandfathers death certificate that he was an Analytical Chemist in Sunderland. I would assume that he would have had to attended a University to obtain his qualifications, but have not been able to find anything in my searches on the internet.

Can someone please point me in the right direction

His details are:
Michael H Staples born 1879 in Brixham Devon.
He moved to Sunderland sometime between 1912 and 1922.
Died Dec 1963 Sunderland.

Thanks
David Staples

Hi David, Your G Grandfather may have qualified before moving to Sunderland but on the other hand he may have obtained his qualifications afterwards. If the latter it may be worth contacting the nearest University or technical institute. It is also possible he obtained a qualification through the Royal Institute of Chemistry.

As an analytical chemist he may have been a member of the Royal Institute of Chemistry as it was known then. It is now the Royal Society of Chemistry. It may be worth contacting them because they have good archives I believe.
