I am attempting to identify the parents and siblings of Robert Brabbs(1802-1869),my 2ndGGF.

His wife,Sarah Standidge, was born in 1805 in Fenton,Yorkshire, and died in approx.1886 in Yorkshire. Her parents were Robert Standidge and Elizabeth Robinson.

Robert and Sarah's children were:
1.John Brabbs(my 1st GGF) b.1839 Wortley W.York.,d.1917,m.Susannah

Robert Brabbs was b.approx.1802 in Philadelphia, Penn.,USA. His family had immigrated to the US sometime prior to 1802 from Yorkshire.I can't help directly, just a few thoughts......First, what is your source for them originally emigrating from Yorkshire? Does this mention a parish or origin? Or have you inferred that they came from Yorkshire beacuse that is where Roberet Brabbs lived later in life? Having said that, I've checked the 1881 census index and this notes only 127 Brabbs entries, the vast majority of whom were born in Yorkshire.

Robert, either alone,or with his parents, moved back to Yorkshire sometime prior to 1824.Robert married Sarah Standidge in 1824 in West Yorkshire.
The parents could potentially have been born 1755-1785-ish - if they returned to England with their family, they could possibly have been alive at the time of the 1841 or even 1851 census. Have you checked these for this area of West Yorkshire for any Brabbs entries? Whilst they won't necessarily show relationship to your chap (unless they were lviing with him) - it at last gives an idea of age and occupation - using this you may then be able to locate wills for potential relatives and these may refer to specific relationships. Census returns may also show other Brabbs born in North America and these may be of interest.

continued.......

Robert died in 1869,in New Wortley,West Yorkshire, and is buried in the New Wortley Cemetary.
Is there a monumental inscription which includes any detail of his family?

4. William Brabbs b.1841,d.1928 Chicago Ill.USA,m.Harriot Anne Brook 1861 in New Wortley W.York.Have you been able to find an obituary for William Brabbs in a local newspaper? This may refer to his family and their origins.

Sorry if you've gone through all these, just trying to suggest the obvious and easiest to begin with.

Hi Ron

Assuming you've turned up nothing in US records (I don't know what they cover at this period) then you're on the path of logical elimination - work out who couldn't have been the parents first then try to whittle that list down further.

Almost all of the Yorkshire Brabbs/Brabs in the 1881 who were born before 1837 hail from the East Riding; a quick dig through the IGI gives a very small area of the East Riding indeed.. pretty much all of the villages are in the Howden area.

That said, the IGI isn't hard evidence, and it also contains Brabbs/Brabs from other parts of the country too... so proceed with caution.

Given the lack of West Riding Brabbs that early, though, it might be worth checking the NBI to see if any other Brabbs burials took place in Leeds & surrounding parishes; there's a chance that if Robert's parents returned from the US with him they may have lived in the same area.

If you've not tried it would probably be very worth trying the US censuses fort 1800 & 1810 to see if there are any clues...

Hope that's of some help at least

Rob
