Looking for any information about the Sherrah family in South Glamorgan.
John Sherrah (b 23.6.1807 Tythegston) married Mary Thomas (b 7.4.1812 Coychurch ), and had 14 children between 1833 and 1859.
Children were :
Mariah, Ann, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Evan, Catherine, Jane, William, Noah, Sarah, David, Daniel and Moses. David, Thomas and Evan emigrated to Australia.
What happened to the rest? And who were John's (seniors) parents? Is anyone else researching this family ?

Maybe the 1861 census gives a clue as to John Sherrar's mother's name. Living with John and Mary is Ann Edmund age 70 widow AUNT. born Coychurch. disability - blind. Not much of a clue I know but .......
Do you have the census records? In 1861 Mariah, Ann and Jane have left the family, but with them is their 6 year old grandson Gomer.
In '71 Only Noah, David, Daniel, Moses and Gomer are there.
By 1881 it is just John. Mary and Gomer.

Lol, yes they did Waitabit? Are you related by chance?
My great great grandfather was Thomas Sherrah ( although he may have come to SA, I think I belong to the decidely un-musical branch of the Sherrah family)

Thank you for that information Christina. I didnt have the 1861 census, so that has been really helpful. Any clue is better than what I have now.
Gomer was actually the illegitimate son of Mariah I believe. Three of the missing boys from the 1871 census can be accounted for here in Adelaide at that time having emigrated.
I'll press on from here. Many thanks for your assistance.

Shay,
I've looked through the Glamorgan FHS baptism and marriage indexes up to 1837. I could not find your John in the baptisms, unless he has been transcribed as John Shevia?, son of Thomas & Ann, baptised 12 July 1807 at Laleston (which is 1-2 miles from Tythegston)
You might be interested that one Alexander Sherrak? married Mary Griffith on 19 Apr 1734 at Coity (both otp). The following offspring of Alexander and Mary were baptised at Coity:
David Sherrah 2 Dec 1735
Anne Sherrah 27 Jun 1737
Catherine Sharah 1742
Mary Sherrah 16 Feb 1746
John Sherrah 22 May 1748
William Sherra 14 Apr 1751
Evan Sherrah 27 Apr 1755
Alexander is a frequent christian name in the Sherra(h), Sherr(e)y family before and after this Alexander, and some entries go back into the 16th century in these west Glamorgan parishes. I wouldn't mind betting that one of Alexander's sons is in your direct line, but it might be easier trying to work forwards from him than backwards from John (or Thomas, if you think he could be John's father).
Good luck,
John

John you are an absolute star!|angel|
That John Shevia is most likely mine as I have my John Sherrah born 23.6.1807 and that baptism date is too close I think for it not to be him.
I think it's time to start hunting for Thomas with various surname spellings!
Thanks again!

Do you want the references for the 1861 and 1851 censuses? I didn't give them as I thought you may have already had them. In 1851 Ann Edmunds is with John and Mary but was written as sister then that was crossed out and lodger written in as well as pauper ag widow. The name is transcribed as Sharar. There is also a death of Mary Sherrah March 1/4 1891 age 78 Bridgend 11a 465

Hi Christina
Yes that would be wonderful! Thanks again for the help. Now all I have to do is find an Ann who was either Sherrah before marriage who became Edmund , or possibly Ann Thomas because she may have been Mary's aunt!
It's just as well I am a patient person when it comes to this hobby of ours. Although I hated jigsaw puzzles as a kid!

1851 HO107 piece 2461 folio 214 page 12 written as Sharar transcribed as Shirar.
All are down as being born Llanilid. John is a farmer of 56 acres. All the children scholars except Ann age 16 who has no occupation against her name. Maria(H) the only one not with them.
1861 RG9/4072 F41 page 1 Gomer is now with them but not Mariah, Ann or Jane.
1871 RG10/5414 F149 page 40 John, Mary, Noah, Moses and Gomer are at home.
1881 RG11/5328 F123 p33 John 74, Mary 67 and Gomer 26.

Hugh Wallis' Genealogical Website (google it) has the baptisms of Noah, Gomer, Sarah, David, Daniel and William. All in Llanilid. Maria is Gomer's mum, no father mentioned.
