I am researching some soldiers who survived WW1 and managed to download a copy of the medal rolls last week, when I try now it tells me I must subscribe.

Was it free and now you have to pay?

If you are talking about the site I'm thinking about then that would be correct, they let you have a little look and if you want to go further then you have to subscribe. Most genealogocal sites I've visited seem to operate in this way, there are none free in the long run.

'Fraid so. You can search for free on the National Archives site at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
and it is only £2 at the moment to download a medal card. Cheaper than a subscription unless you want oodles. Or of course you can treat yourself to a visit to Kew!

If you're talking about our friends beginning with A, they had a special offer on free medal cards for November, only. If you still managed to get the actual cards last week, they must have been a few days late switching it off.
