My ancestor was a shoemaker in Devon from the 1850s onwards. But every child seems to have been born in a different village!
Were shoemakers usually itinerant?
Thank you!

One day the Devil had decided he had had enough of the religious revival in the Valleys, and his chief surveyor told him if he could dam the Taff at Tongwynlais (where there is a cut in the mountain) he would drown all the godly types North of Cardiff. So off the Devil goes with his shovel of earth. He had walked all the way from London and was getting a bit tired when just North of Cardiff he happened to meet a man at a stile.
Now this man was a roving cobbler (shoe repairer)
The Devil said to him “My good man! I am on a quest pray tell me how far is the gorge at Tongwynlais”. Now this cobbler wasn't your average daft Welshman he could tell that this guy was up to no good. So he replied "Good sir I have in my bag all the shoes that I have worn out walking from Tongwynlais" The Devil saw this and decided enough was enough and threw his shovel full of earth into the field and headed back to London where he belonged. This shovel full of earth has been known for many a year as the Twmpath.
THIS IS WHAT YOU FIND WHEN TRAWLING THROUGH THE FORUMS … :)
