Hi Forumites
I have a little puzzle - I have a Sarah Ann Hutton b~1835 of Kilrklinton CUM who I cannot find a birth/baptism record of. I have Sarah on the 1851 Census as a servant in the Boustead household in Wetheral - Source HO107/2429 f/489 p/29
She marries a Thomas Kennedy in Q2 1860 Carlisle 10b 646 and can be found in 1861 in Irthington together with hubby and his mother Jane Holliday - [2nd marriage] (nee Dodgson) and 1 month old son John before moving to Ormskirk LAN for the 1881 census.
A passed away aunt of mine told me she had found the MC for Sarah but I didn't get a copy of it of her...and she told me that the brides father is stated as Joseph Hutton...unfortunately I have not found any baptismal records of Sarah as yet to verify that or even of a Joseph in Kirklinton...
Anyone got access to PR's or Vitals for Kirklinton please???
Thanks for looking - HiFly

Hallo HiFly
There is a Sarah Hutton in the 1841 census with parents Joseph and Elizabeth, both aged about 25 - but they are at Cumwhinton, Cumberland. Sarah is 7, and then there are Richard, David and Robert (5, 3 and 2 months). Samuel and Margaret Smith (both about 40) are also with them, possibly in-laws? from Cumberland and Ireland respectively, and also Mary Ann Smith (6 months) from Cumberland.
The reference is HO107; 166; 4/7; 8.
Any use?

I've just checked, and Kirklinton and Cumwhinton are only about 7 or 8 miles apart. This being the case, Joseph Hutton seems to be the likely name for Sarah's father.

Thanks Tomasin - I've seen that but think it may be a Hutton family group to far away...are there any other Sarah Huttons of that age in the area? {just want to check in case the father = Joseph info is wrong}
HiFly
Just spotted your point about distance.....you sure?? Cause I had a look at Google Map and I measure it about 13miles...

Looking at the 1851 census, Elizabeth HUTTON has become Elizabeth WALLACE aged 37 with several HUTTON kids ... although the kids were born in Wetheral and Thursby, Elizabeth herself was born in Kirklinton. Is it not possible that Elizabeth was at her parent's home at the time she had Sarah?
Good Point Geoff - Have now found Joseph's death on BMD in Q4 1843 Wigton Reg Dist v/25 p/116 - so that's why he's not around in 1851.
Marriage of Joseph Hutton & Elizabeth Coulthard spotted 2 Oct 1834 @ St Cuthberts, Carlisle - so that would fit in?? and then checking on Elizabeth's parents/siblings as you suggest - all baptised in Kirklington!!!
However could't find Sarah's baptism in Kirklinton...grrrrrrrr
Just noted on IGI that there was another Hutton family in Thursby where Joseph son David was baptised....maybe living/staying with rellies @ time? (just thinking out aloud).

My note about distance was VERY approximate! Just looked on the road atlas, and it's more like nine miles, and that's as the crow flies.
Wetheral is right next to Cumwhinton, and Thursby is about as far to the west of Cumwhinton as Kirklinton is to the north. I think you might have pockets of Huttons (and the Coulthards), all in the Carlisle area.

But it doesn't explain the continued production of little HUTTONs till 1846 - perhaps one of these does.

Thanks Geoff for the sanity / reality check...even after a couple of years of researching now - I still occasionally fall into the "assumption" trap!!
|blush|
It's only with the gooodwill of all fellow forumites that we gradually get to fit the jigsaw together.... Thanks again Geoff....I'll go back to 1st Gear again. |nutkick|

Don't know if this is of any help, I am doing some transcribing some PR's, unfortunately a much earlier period than the one you are currently researching. The name HUTTON appears in the parish of CARTMELL so perhaps it might be worth a look.
