Does anyone know if there is a surname or street index for 1871 Kendal, Westmorland?
Elizabeth Freeland GARDINER/GARDNER/GARDENER aged c.23yrs born Glasgow, Scotland had an illegitimate daughter 6 weeks after the census at Yard 148,no.5 Highgate,Kendal, Westmoreland & was working in a shoe factory at that time.
A kind lady had a look on Ancestry but couldn’t find Elizabeth in the search indexes so hope that a folio/page number would help.

Hi Sally,
Whenever you want to know if indexes etc have been published the best place to start is the local FHS.
Their websites can be accessed either via Genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/
click on relevant county, then look for societies
or the Federation of Family Histoy Societies
(general section please enter ; contacting our members)
Whilst on the Genuki page always have a look under places like census and church records as it may say that 'Fred Bloggs has transcribed xyz' and give a link.
With a bit of luck you should also find a surname interests link and even a 'look-ups offered' link.

Thank you for replying Pam, I had already been to Genuki before I posted my request. No published indexes on the FHS & it appears that the lookup site has disappeared.
Elizabeth will just have to sit on the backburner until ACDB release the 1871 when I shall have to go through it page by page.

Elizabeth Freeland GARDINER/GARDNER/GARDENER aged c.23yrs born Glasgow, Scotland had an illegitimate daughter 6 weeks after the census at Yard 148,no.5 Highgate,Kendal, Westmoreland & was working in a shoe factory at that time.I know this will probably seem a strange suggestion but - I just had a look on Ancestry and found an "Elizabeth Gowby" as a lodger, unmarried, aged 20, machinist, born Scotland Edinburgh, at the address "yard 149 No 5" with "Highgate" written above it (in Kendal). RG10/5285, Folio 51a. The previous page shows 148 yard Nos 1-4.
There's also a 17 year old Margret Gregg, same occupation and birthplace, lodging there - perhaps scope for some confusion between them?
I had done a search for just Elizabeth, with birthplace of Scotland and residence as Westmorland and was rather surprised myself to come up with that address, so perhaps she is worth bearing in mind (at least it seems to have found the address for you!).

Thanks Barbara
I was sent the image for the address by another kind lady & dispite the name & place of birth being wrong I am still considering it - if nothing else it could just be that these were friends she stayed with while she had the baby, hence that address.
The trouble with these online indexes are that you have to try & guess what spelling the name was transcribed as. My PEILL was PEICE on 1871 Ancestry, my NELSON was WILSON on 1901 National Archives & my MANGIN is MANYA 1861 on 1837online.
Thanks again Barbara but as I said to Pam I will just have to wait for the cd & go from page to page looking for Elizabeth.
Regards
Sally
