Hi rom montreal Quebec Canada,,,,,,,,,,,,Do you need help obtaining, birth marriage or deaths certificates from montreal? We have a National Archives here for which I have a membership, and its only a few minutes away from me, I would be happy to look ups.these documents ARE NOT the new kind that we as Quebecers must have today, but copies of the originals parish registers.........you will need to send year of the event , names and if possible the church/parish.......it really is a wonderful service, I was there this week and obtained 2 documents I have been searching for for years.feel free to ask me for help.

Hi
I’d be very grateful if you could look up the following for me:
George Moffatt married Mary Ridge in Montreal. The marriage is recorded in the Cambrian Index (Newspapers from South Wales - http://www2.swansea.gov.uk/_info/cambrian/default.asp ) and the publication date is 23rd May 1851 so it would presumably have happened shortly before that. I’d really like to know any details about them – ages, parents’ & witnesses’ names, - anything! as he may be my great-great uncle who seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. |banghead|
There’s no rush – he’s been missing for a long time already, and of course I’m probably clutching at straws with his one… :D
Many thanks!

Hi Brenda
Do not know if you are still doing look ups.
I am trying to find Alice Worrall who arrived at Montreal 28 May 1910 from England on the Corscian out of Liverpool. She married George A Betts also from England sometime after that possibly Verdun, Montreal. Their son Arthur William Betts was born Montreal early 1922 and then the family crossed to USA to live in Buffalo City, NY on 1 June 1923.
Alice Worrall was my husband's natural grandmother through her first son Cyril Worrall born 1905 who was informally adopted but we have never been able to find any information about her until very recently. Would really appreciate any information you can find.
Many thanks
Pam

Pam, they were married on the day she arrived, 28 May 1910, in St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Montreal.
George Arthur Betts Bachelor, Brick-Maker, of Ville Emard in the County of Jacques Cartier son of John Betts and of his wife Emma Blackwell; and Alice Worrall of Birmingham, England daughter of Thomas Worrall and of his wife Ellen Allcott; were married by me on the authority of Licence on the twenty eighth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and ten, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
Signed by the minister Wm. Smith, and George and Alice.
Witnesses Frederick W. and Mary A. Millington

Hi Brenda
I wonder whether you would be able to help me. I am looking for information on my uncle George Grove who I believe died on 12 February 1940 in Montreal with a brain tumor. I am not sure how to go about getting a death certificate. When he first came to Canada in 1920 on the 'Tunisian' he lived at Oakner and in c. 1933 he was living in Saskatoon possibly where he married. His wife died in 1935 at Hamiota. I am also aware of a connection with Moose Jaw as someone there dealt with his will and estate.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Regards
Norman

Hi Brenda,
This probably not the type of query you will be able to help with, but it is a brick wall I have been struggling unsuccessfully to demolish and I am beginning to get desperate.
William George Cowling, born 27 Sept 1877, Mary Tavy/Brentor/Tavistock, Devon, son of Henry and Mary Ann (Doidge) Cowling. Stone mason/ bricklayer by trade. Arrived Montreal 5 Jun 1904 on board "Dominion". Stated destination Toronto. After this he disappears. Not on Canadian nor U K census in 1911. Would there have been any additional entry documentation that might give more detail? Any suggestion, hint or clue would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Vic

Hello Brenda
Just wondering if you had any luck with my enquiry of 28th Nov 2008? :smile5:

Squaredancer, they were married 29 April 1851, Anglican Christ Church, Montreal. No ages or parents names are given but he was “George Moffatt the younger, of the City of Montreal, Esqr, bachelor.”
There were several witnesses and I can send you the image if you’d like.
They had a son Samuel George Warneford MOFFATT born 20 March 1852 in Montreal. On that record his father was “George Moffatt Esqr, Jr, Merchant.” Sponsors were S. Gerrard, Geo. Moffatt and Sophia Moffatt.

Vic, it's probably a long shot but you can use the Ask a Librarian service at the Toronto Public Library and they will look up one person over three years in the city directories. It may tell you whether William made it to Toronto.
There is that other William George Cowling the same age living in Toronto but occupations are usually given, which might help you to differentiate them if they're listed.
I looked in Montreal directories in case he decided to stay there but he doesn't show up. I've checked other Canadian sources and as you say he seems to disappear!

Hi Brenda,
Many thanks for your prompt reply and suggestion. I will follow it up. I have investigated the "other" WGC of Toronto and so should be able to recognise any reference to him.

Many thanks, BeeJay - this confirms he isn't mine, but at least I know now. The search goes on!
I still have a sneaking suspicion that there may be some connection to my lot. It'll turn up one day...

Hi, just wondering if you are still able to help with Canadian enquiries. I'm trying to trace the Jacques family. The only information I have is that my gg grandfather John Jacques was born in Lower Canada in about 1832 and arrived in London sometime before 1860. His father was also John Jacques and he was a gentleman's servant (this info came from John's marriage certificate.)
I know it's very vague but it really is all I have.
All the best
Pam

Pam, I didn't find any John JACQUES to match your info, only these three Jeans but none of them seem likely:
Jean Baptiste JACQUES, born 19 Sept 1830, bap. 20 Sept, Notre Dame, Quebec, son of Jean Baptiste & Marie JACQUES, wheelwright. In the 1851 census both Jean Baptiste Jr. and Sr. are wheelwrights.
Jean JACQUES, born 18 April 1833, bap. 18 April, St. Joseph, Co. Beauce, son of Jean & Euphrasime JACQUES , farmer.
Jean Bapstiste ST. JACQUES, born 26 Aug 1831, bap. 26 Aug, son of Jean Baptiste & Florence ST. JACQUES, St. Pie, Co. Bagot, farmer.
I had no luck with the 1851 census either.

I shall appreciate assistance with locating my great grandmother's death record. Clara May Hewitson married to Leonard William Welch; the family is found in the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census under the last name Walch and in 1911 she is identified by Hewitson. In 1901 they resided in Beaujarnois (sp) and in 1911 at Coteau Landing.
In his 1915 WWI attestation my great-grandfather is listed as a widower. If it may be any indicator of where the family resided after the 1911 census, my great grandfather enlisted at Alexandria, Ontario.
In a verbal contact with Mt. Royal cemetery, I checked on a Clara Welch who died July 1914. I was told she died at Verdun, was cremated with the remains turned over to the family for burial elsewhere. I do not know if this is my great grandmother but the age range (1870-1873 depending upon which census--Canadian or British you view.) Clara May Hewitson was born in March 1873 at Salford, England. Her father was Thomas Hewitson and her mother was Mary Horrocks. Clara May also had a previous marriage to Frederic Glennon--who knows what identifiers may turn up in records so I provide as much as I have.
Thank you for your assistance.
