Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for Brighton please. Unfortunately I do not have an address for the couple, but both were living in Upper Edward Street, in Brighton at the time of their marriage on 3rd November 1847, at St. Nicholas. The couple in question were Caroline Gorringe, and she married William Smith, who I believe to be a grocer. William's Father on the marriage certificate was down as John Smith, labourer.

The strange thing about this marriage, is that in subsequent censuses, 1881 / 1891 / 1901, Caroline "Smith" was always down as Caroline Gorringe. When her Mother died in 1880, she was the informant on the death certificate, as Caroline Gorringe! When Caroline "Gorringe" was buried, she was buried as Caroline Smith!

Any info will be gratefully received, and if anyone has any suggestions as to why Caroline continued using her maiden name, I would love to hear from you. I did wonder whether William Smith has died shortly after their marriage, but because the name of Smith is plentiful, I have been unable to find him as being dead, or perhaps they divorced! Plus the fact that I have no idea where he came from, how old he was, or even what happened to him!! Over to you.

Thanks
