I'm trying to find anything about James Cowey who fathered my GreatX4 Grandfather George Cowey (b.~1809) and he listed James as being a mariner on his wedding certs in 1850 and 1869. I have no other solid info on him but Procat recommended that I ask you about what info the Mechant and Royal Navy keep and what I should be checking? Do they have records or indexes online that I can search? Are they likely to have family recorded?

I haven't been able to find much on "James Cowey, definitely mine", except for a "possibly mine, James Cowey" and we know he married, was a Ship owner in Howard St between 1819-1827 at least and had a child who died in infancy in 1819. The address is interesting as my "known" Cowey lot have been in Howard St for sure.

Appreciate your help!
Cheers,
Summer.

Hi Geoffers,

Further to the forum below, and further to Procat's suggestion that I contact yourself re Merchant Navy matters (being the guru that you are!), I was just wondering if you had any more thoughts re my last post:
"My questions now are centred around the possibility that James and Catherine Cowey are George Cowey's parents and how I can prove/disprove that if I don't find a baptism record for George????
Will James Cowey have any records in the Merchant Navy that would help in this task? Or would they centre around HIS parents?"

I know you've given me a lot of help already, and I'm sorry if I'm being greedy of your time! If you can't, that's OK!
Thanks,
Summer.

If you cannot locate a baptism (have you tried non-conformist recrods?), if George did not marry by licence, if James did not live with George in his old age - then your best bet is if James left a will.

Early Merchant Navy records are limited - I've put a link to research guides on your thread - make yourself a cuppa and have a browse as to what is likely to survive.
