John Davies, a Merchant's Clerk, was married in M/c Cathedral 27 August 1867, when his age was shown as 25 & his address as 301 Collyhurst Old Road; on later Censuses he shows his place of birth as Manchester. His father, also John, is shown as a Hat Manufacturer.
In order to find his mother, we were wondering if someone may be able to find them on the earlier Censuses (!851/1861). Unfortunately, this is the earliest info we have, so we don't have any other family names, and thewre seem to be a number of John Davies in the Births Indexes for the relevant years.
ANY information will be greatly appreciated!

There are a couple of baptisms at Man Cath which are possibles.
13 July 1845
John son of John & Mary DAVIS.
16 May 1847
John son of John& Hannah DAVIES.
I'll take a look at the PRs to see if any occupations are given for the fathers.

Would you also post the census returns that you have for them in 1871 please.

The only 1871 Census return we have is for John junior for Church Lane Prestwich, which shows John (age 28), his wife Mary Jane, and 2 children, ages 2 & 1. We don't have any Census for John senior.
Thanks for your efforts so far - we keep our fingers crossed!

Ah...it's a small world. My sister has lived in Church Lane for the last thirty odd years. It's a pity that the Census does not give house numbers. Those two possible baptism did not fit as the occupations were wrong. One a weaver the other a shoemaker.I thought that I would try to find John sr in the 1861 Census. The address (301) Collyhurst Old Road does not appear in the 1861 Census Street Index here at MCL.Maybe the vicar invented the address.Number one attempt snookered! I then looked at the the 1861 TD. As you can imagine there were a few dozen DAVIES and quite few Johns, but none in the Hat Making line.So John sr had the temerity to be either dead, not a head of household, couldn't be bothered to be listed, changed occuption, living outside the area covered by the TD or listed as DAVIS.When I get a chance I will have look in the TDs.Meanwhile if you have access to it. have a butchers at the 1861 Census for Prestwich. You might find him in the area.

We did wonder whether John snr might appear in the 1871 Census as that is only 4 years after the son's marriage? The Prestwich connection is probably on John jun's wife's side - her Wood family also lived on Church Lane.
Anyway, many thanks for your efforts - we still have our fingers crossed!
