I have a potential gateway ancestor in John Churchill of Corton & decided to look for wills to see if I close the gap between the two families of Churchill in Corton.
A search of the wills on NA Documentsonline has turned up a document refered to as "Sentence of John Churchehill or Churchill of Corton, Dorset". Date 12 February 1601 PROB11/97.
Does anybody know what the meaning of the word "Sentence" is in this context & why this document would be called a sentence & not a will?

Have a read through TNA's catalogue on Probate

You want to scroll down to Section 2.4 Records in Litigation (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletID=168)

This basically seems to be a disputed will and the decision made.
