Hi Can anybody help me?
My great grandfather was Mr George William Cox, born in 1881 or 1882, more than likely live in Leicestershire. he went over to SA in the time of the boer war anytime between 1899 and 1901. If he went over to fight in Natal South Africa, during the angloboer war, which regiment would he have likely served with and how can I find his details. I don't have a date of birth, I only have his south african death notice which has only a date of death. I have found details of another GW Cox from CHeshire, that served with the IY but I dont think that is him as he is older.
I would imagine he fought around the Ladismith area as he got married in Dundee.

Thank you kindly Natalie

To try and tie things down a litte, do you have a marriage certificate for him? If so, does it record his dad's name and occuaption. Using that you may be able to identify the family in census and so track down his birth certificate. With that information (beaing in mind that COX is a frequently occurring surname) you then stand a better chance of identifying him in amongst the service records held at The National Archives.

Kevin Asplin's web-site (http://www.britishmedals.us/kevin/intro.html)has a lot of information

Have a read through TNA's research guides - British Army (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp#b)

When did he die?

Hi Natalie, Whilst looking through Kevin Asplin's web site I came across these two names Cox, G.W. Private I.Y. Hospital Staff
40902, Private George William Cox, 26th Bn. I.Y.
I hope this is of help, they were listed under Nominal Rolls Imperial Yeomanary. There is some very interesting reading there. wildwanderer

Hi Natalie - Unfortunately you can't assume which regiment or corps a man served in even if you know where he was from. If you don't know the unit your best bet is to have a search done in series WO 97 at the National Archives. This is the regular soldiers' series of the period and is arranged by name not by unit.

He will not have been with the Imperial Yeomanry as they didn't serve in the Natal campaign.

There is a George Cox born Leicestershire , aged 18 in 1901 at the District Health Quarter of the 17th Regiment, Leicestershire. He was then a private. This just possibly might be your George Cox.
There is a George William C. Cox in 1891 census , born St. Margaret's Leicester in 1882 living with parents Alfred and Emily and siblings in Carly St Leics. This may/may not be the same as the one above.
There are several George Cox born Leics in 1881/1883. in St. Margaret's leics.
The name of his father will be on discharge papers.

Thanks for making the kind offer to Natalie - unfortunately, she has only posted the one message and last visited the forums in November 2008 - so may not respond.
