I believe Taunton is in Cornwall, is this so? Living in Australia I don't know much about that part of England. We think my Husbands grandfather lived down there for a while sometime around 1912-1916. His name if Joseph Randolph Welsby and practiced as a Vet. He was a member of the Vet's Society in London and there is a mention on his record of him living there.
Thanks

Dear June,
Hi again. Have just had a quick look on 1901 census. there was a Joseph Welsby In Sutton Lancashire who was a vet. You could have a quick 'shuftie' there.

Tip: Only put in Surname and Forename.
I am new to this passtime and so cannot offer much more than this, hope that it helps!

Two excellent resources for locating present day UK placenames are www.streetmap.co.uk (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/) and www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/).
For historic UK placenames, try http://www.old-maps.co.uk (http://www.old-maps.co.uk/).
Taunton is a fairly well-known location but the above resources will let you look at its location in context to the rest of Somerset and can be especially useful for unearthing smaller, lesser-known towns and villages.
Good luck.

Hi There
Might I also recommend a program called Parish Locator.
I find it extremely useful in my research.
Also call ParLoc .. free dowload.

This site - Archive CD Books (http://www.parishchest.com/en-gb/dept_675.html)
has Kelly's 1914 Somerset directory. It might be worth looking through the Taunton pages.

Thank you to all above who have answered my query. I have found Taunton in Somerset, now all I have to do is try to find out where he was there. I'll try that directory address and see what I get.

June,
Living close to Taunton I accepted your belief that the town is in Cornwall as I wouldn't know where some of the smaller towns in Oz are but I shuddered when someone from UK suggested it is in Devon!!! I thought 'Taunton Cider' had put the place on the map especially with younger viewers but obviously it's what's in the bottle and not what's printed on the label that concerns them.
Should you find an address or building (or whatever) that relates to your ancestor being in Taunton I am always willing to go out and take digital photos and email them on. Just let me know if the requirement arises.
Best wishes
