Thread moved to the Boer War section - it should get a better response here :)

If looking for information on an commissioned officer a couple of simple ways to trace a career are:

1) The Army List - published annually, copies can be found in larger libraries and record offices - Guildhall Library, TNA, The Society of Genealogists has an incomplete run,

2) The London Gazette (http://www.londongazette.co.uk/home.aspx?geotype=London)publishes commissions and promotions of officers and is worth checking inc ase anyone was mentioned in despatches.

The National Archives (TNA) at Kew will hold original records relating to your chap. Searching TNA's catalogue shows 4 officers records for men with the name 'G.FRANCIS' (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=francis+g&txtfirstdate=1914&txtlastdate=1920&txtrestriction=WO339&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=22&image1.y=7).

Before going to TNA, it is worth reading their research guides

Army Officers' records 1660-1913 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=13)
Army Officers' records WW1 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=6)
