WW1 Military Hospital's

Question: Does any one know of a list of Military hospital in the UK during and just after WW1.

I'm trying to find a Great Uncle who possibly died during the 1st WW. No who is alive today in the family has every heard of him although I have his birth certificate. The UK BMD indexes show a few possibles but no real 'yes that could be him' and beleive me I've searched them from 1901 to the end a few times. He's alive in the 1901 census and has then disappeared.

I have a maybe/possible dying in 1918 hence the above question.

For the record I'm looking for Albert Frederick Day born 9 Nov 1887 in Holywell
Street, Oxford.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Oh forgot to add I've check the medal indexes and Commenwealth War Graves and the military death indexes as well, there are possibles but again no definates and the medal indexes don't cover the Navy.

As a passing thought, have you tried looknig for a will for his father? You may be lucky to find the gt uncle mentioned and then a codicil to the will notes the death and his portion being shared elsewhere - or it might refer to his son Albert Frederick who now resides in Canada/South Africa - or where-ever?

Other thoughts (apologies if it's going over old ground for you) - Could he have died at sea - check Index of Marine Deaths 1837-1965; or otherwise abroad - check the Index to Consular registers of deaths 1849-1965.

Have you checked under DAY and DEY?

Is there/Was there a plot where family were buried? Might he be mentioned on such a memorial? (e.g "their son Albert Frederick", died at sea/in France, etc).

Hi Geoffers,

Thanks for the thoughts, his father died in 1911 in Oxford, no will. The mother died in 1930 again no will. I've traced all except one brothers and sisters and none of them appear to have left a will, so that option out. The father died in Oxford whilst the mother died in Reigate have so far been unable to trace where they are buried so no family grave/plot. The other brothers & sister died all over the country from Huddersfied to NZ.
I haven't had a good look at DEY surname, main reason the whole family seems to have used there full names and ages on every offical certificate I've got. That might be worth a look if the hospital info doesn't throw anything up.

I've already used the site, one of the first places I checked. Problem with it is if there is no age / relation recordered against the name then you've no way of knowing if you've found who your looking for. same applies to the PRO Medals, lots of Albert's, which one if any is mine?

Have you tried the above? Don't know if your local library has copies (I know it's not of any help, but Bristol Central Library has a copy). It does mean a long flog, but if you cross refer the CWGC info with the books, yeah there are books for each Regiment, it should give place of enlistment and place of birth. Might help.
