Child baptised in St Johns,

Hi all

This is going to sound REALLY dumb.

I have an ancestor who, in 1835 was baptised in St John Evangelist in lambeth, Surrey.

Were children normally baptised under their mother's religion or did that not matter?

It may explain why I have not been able to find any details on the mother!

Not dumb, but I am confused by the question.

You've posted this in the Non Conformist section - St John the Evangelist in Lambeth (Waterloo) is a normal Anglican (Church of England) church, so where does the nonconformist element come into things? As you say that you have been unable to find any details on the mother, presumably you're not saying that she was noncomformist therefore you are surprised to find an Anglican baptism for the child, so, perhaps I'm being a bit dense this afternoon but, in short - I don't get it.

Im sorry - I thought I read that St John was Baptist.
