Has anyone experience of MyHeritage online trees?
It has something called Smart matches where it matches up other users who have the some person's details in their trees. Well that's OK, one person has 123 matches to my tree, basically a complete line that is identical to mine.
I have tried to contact this person, but as of yet I haven't a reply. Does your contact form go to their email address or just to their online account?
Thanks

From my understanding the sites act as third party connection, redirecting your query to the other's direct email via their online account information. At least that is how genes and A* do it. If they don't respond either their account has expired (they will get the query but will not be able to reply) If you haven't heard from them in a week send another query and include your private email address. If they still don't reply they are either rude or gone from this world.

I don't have many young ones that are relevant but the ones under 21 I mark as Minor Whathisname. Except for my website which is private, this is what I have done with genesreunited. I use A*for working tree so that is private to. Anyone wanting info has to provide info first but I always respond.

Have a look at http://vswells.tribalpages.com. The only thing that you will see if you click on any of the names is the surname (pops up with access password required). I just tried it to make sure it worked. It only costs about $20 and shows events such as birthdays and ancestors lines in colours of your choosing. There is also a forum for technical and other support. There is also a connections list which will show other people trees on tribal that have matching names and you would contact the administrator (owner) of that site. You can add photos ect. and a whole lot of other stuff.
And you can upload your already created GEDCOM - there are explicit links on how to do it with FTM and a couple of others

My Heritage also do something called photo tagging they say name a person once and they wil find all photo's of that person and put them together from your collection.
Would this help identify unknown ancestors?

for all you neat, computer-savvy people. My family tree is a series of A2 (art shop) thick sheets of paper with an ever-increasing palimpsest of information written in pen (proved), pencil (putative), and colour-dotted (which census, whether certificates obtained). Many of the names are laden with notes about any family stories, peculiarities, jobs, locations (surprisingly mobile for poor Victorians!), Poor Law and parish records info - I go for the social history aspect of genealogy rather than a bare-bones tree. http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-confused-smileys-358.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/Free-Sexy-Smileys/)
I'm going to look at the sites suggested here, and see if I can squeeze my mob into something 21st century-looking! http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-cool-smileys-256.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/)

who set me off on the unusual Smileys trail! They can be great fun - just like this site: http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-jumping-smileys-380.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/)
However - beware! How did I get my tag? Not looking closely enough at one of my smiley postings.....

You can choose to have your MyHeritage tree completely private, including disabling smart matching. I am not sure about the messaging system, but I feel certain that the webmaster would get an email. MyHeritage has free sites too.
I was given a free 4 year gold membership because I have always had a tree on Gencircles, who merged with MyHeritage. I actually dislike the MyHeritage tree set up, it drives me bonkers as it is so tedious to navigate and is not even attractive. It is also messy with carrying sources over, so I started taking all my source out and putting them into the notes section. I love the tree builder though, and am gradually turning my ancestors over into that - and then on to Tribal Pages.
I started off with a free site on Tribal Pages - which can be completely private too, you do not even have to display the home page to anyone. It is easy to choose your privacy settings, you can choose to let some parts be public and others private, but I opted only for the home page with the list of surnames to be public. You can also opt in or out for their system of smart matching, which only matches people with the same details and takes into account their parents names as well.
I ended up paying the small yearly sum, for no adverts (which were barely noticeable) just to have more note space, being a limit of about 1000 characters in the free site. Plus I wanted to highlight the direct ancestors of both myself and my husband, in the free site you can only highlight one. I love it when the little coloured squares show up side by side, showing our mutual relations!

Christine How did you opt out of the smart matching. I have asked tribal how to delete these "connections" to other trees and have not had an adequate answer. They told me it was like a google search engine and you couldn't delete them. I only want to keep those that may have relevance to me.
Also love the coloured squares showing relative connections and the relationship values (although I would rather see it pared downed to 1st, 2nd cousin's ect., 1, 2 x's removed)

On MyHertiage, it is Tools, Options.
I supposed that if you have these settings done like this before you publish you will be safe from it.

Marie you can change the background by clicking tools and colours. And there you can experiment with different backgrounds and type colours. And thank you for the compliment - I am still not good at a lot of stuff but I keep trying :D

On Tribal, in edit mode, select TribalPages Directory.
Click the 'remove' button to remove all your relatives from the directory - because then there can be no 'connections' There is no way to select part options at all. Considering that they match parents names as well as given dates, the chances are pretty high that it is a real match with someone on your tree.

MyHeritage is a another company that has free family history websites, along with your own personal forum you can conduct with your family and friends or the public, photo albums, etc. They hav eone of those interactive trees which take ages to load and I dislike.
TribalPages is much better. I like the clean uncluttered style.
You need to go into Edit mode to change your colours, etc. Easy done, change it as much as you like!

Thanks Christine.:) I know all the matches were good but they still have no relevance to my tree - I just don't want to see them. So I will do as you suggest. Thanks
