I am trying to trace one of my ancestors who served in the British Army in India. His name is George HOPPER, and his father’s name is Henry HOPPER, a greengrocer. He was born about 1867/8 as he was 28 years old when he married in 1896 in Meerut, India. He was Lance Corporal 5th Lancer at the time of his marriage; was Staff Sergeant Supply and Transport Corps (Meerut) in 1903 (his daughter’s birth) and Retired Lieutenant Farms Department (Meerut) in 1926 (his daughter’s marriage).GRO have no record of his birth in United Kingdom, neither do their Overseas Department have a record of his birth. I have tracked down 11 George HOPPER born in England between 1866 and 1869; but none of them have a Henry as father. There is no record of him in the Indian Office Records of the British Library. One interesting bit of information I came across was a George HOPPER, born 14 January 1867, mentioned in the Indian Army Quarterly List for 1 January 1912. Under the heading Remarks is mentions Govt. Farm, Meerut. This could be the same person; but how does one go about verifying that information.

The British Library has some useful stuff in its India Office collections.

Hi

I have tried both the FIBIS and the British Library; but have drawn a blank. They do not have any details on George HOPPER. Kew, on the other hand will not do a look up for me in their Army Records. they prefer me to do the look up.

Peter.
