View Full Version : Labels below posters' names

Why do we have these labels or mottoes attached to our names? I know it is some sort of indicator based on number of posts, but I find them irritatating. Do others agree?

I think they're just a bit of fun, but if it really bothers you why not ask Bo Peep if yours can be removed?

Nope, don't agree. It's a bit of warm, light-hearted creativity and I am amused by them.

You might like to find the other thread/s on this subject?
I thought mine meant that I was cracking up the first time I saw it - still not sure, perhaps it does. But I like to think that it is an English expression of terrific. :D

Oh absolutely Christine! Have you seen any of the Wallace and Grommit films? because one of Wallace's favourite expressions is "Cracking Cheese Grommit."
meaning that it is of the highest quality and extremely sought after.

I think they are a good addition to the site, and help to lighten the dusty image some of us may otherwise aquire.
Genealogy should be fun and though we need to research and document carefully, we all need a smile and a good laugh frm time to time.
Personally I'm all for a lighter side to the site.
Have a great day

Sorry, daggers, but I don't agree at all. They're light-hearted and fun, and surely you can ignore them if they bother you.
When I started here, it was back in the old days (this summer!) of China and Emerald, and then Bo changed them all ... and waited for people to notice.
I was http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-happy-smileys-302.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/) http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-happy-smileys-310.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/Free-Sexy-Smileys/) http://freesmileyface.net/smiley/Happy/happy-132.gif (http://freesmileyface.net) over the moon (and very flattered) when I got one of my own.
Whoops, perhaps you don't like Smileys, either? http://bestsmileys.com/doh/2.gif

I think Daggers may be in the minority on this one. They are fun - and it's nice to log and and see if anything has been changed - and personally I think it is a compliment that Bo looks at the individuals and their postings and comes up with some very light hearted descriptions |bowdown|

I feel I should give Daggers some support on this. I have to admit I'm not crazy about them, but they're quite easy to ignore and the intentions are good.

I did think about a reference to grumpy old men-stroke-women-stroke-people but I decided it was better to be magnanimous and refrain.
I'm afraid I've only just learnt to use Smileys, thanks to a magnanimous person on Brit-Gen, so I'm having a field day, especially as I have one of those horrid e-mail addresses where they won't work, so you'll have either ignore my posts or be magnanimous and put up with me! http://easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-happy-smileys-456.gif (http://easyfreesmileys.com/Free-Sexy-Smileys/)

Mutley and Jan are the experts on crazy smileys from goodness knows where ;) I can manage the B-G basic ones, but all these mad ones are beyond me :)
Personally, the "motto" thing doesn't bother me one way or the other. I like the fact that a lot of members love them and like to see what Bo Peep will come up with next :) But I appreciate that not everyone will like them.
We are all individuals (quote the Monty Python Life Of Brian here...) and thus we will always find some who don't like the little comments.Everyone is entitled to their view and I will always respect that. But they are hardly offensive and, as they brighten many members days, they are fine by me.

I am afraid I disagree -- I like Bo's categories, too! And I need to remember always to look up there and see whether they change or not. They are fun.
Can't be serious ALL the time - to paraphrase: "all work and no play makes us dull boys and girls" ;)
And it surely doesn't hurt our research - heaven knows you have to laugh when you have a |banghead| or else you'd |sad1| all the time and that would be NO FUN AT ALL.
So thats you and me who are "laid back" Mary Anne, according to Bo's latest "tweaks" :D

I'm not keen on smilies either, especially the moving ones.
The static ones I can ignore but I wish I could switch off some of the flashing / jumping ones - I find them distracting.
Right, that's me had a grump. I feel better for that.

You can turn the smileys off (including ones from elsewhere - but I suspect that will stop you seeing stuff from photobucket for example as well) -
User CP > Edit Options > Thread Display Options > Visible Post Elements.
Unticking the "Show Images" box will turn off smileys etc I believe

I love Smilies and the captions and the Avatars, but then I am a bit odd and have a very strange sense of the ridiculous - Monty Python, Blackadder et al.
Most of my Smilies are from Photobucket

Labels below the posters' names? I love them.
I don't know how long I'd been "learning" (according to Bo-Peep) before I even noticed my label had changed, but today was a whole new story.
I had found that another brick had been thrown up on top of one of my walls and came to the forum to ask for help. I felt just a wee bit jaded and bedraggled.
When I completed my post, I saw that I had been elevated from "learning" to being "on a distinguished road".
Instead of reaching for the flagon (which I was so sorely tempted to do earlier on) I found that I felt more like the little puppy who had crept into the house after being caught in a downpour - to find a nice warm fire waiting.|hug|
Sure it's done in fun, but full marks to Bo for keeping an eye on the forum and giving that little bit of encouragement when she feels it's deserved or needed. Every ego needs a little stroking every now and again and I feel so much better having been given my little pat.
Keep it up Bo, it's great, (and my tail is wagging like mad).|wave|

Not sure whether to believe that or not.
You could be one of those magical cats who just wants us to think it is someone else making the posts.
And I know it is possible because I have seen those sorts of cats on tv.
Hi Procat,
Well with a name like yours you just have to support the cat! Mind you I think you may well be right. The cat probably has more experience than me with old bones!

Maggie, if you scroll down right to the bottom of the page you will see a little list telling you whether you have smilies and images enabled. If you wish to disable smilies, next time you hit the Reply button, instead of just hitting Submit, scroll down a little bit first to where it says Additional Options. Here there is a check box for Disable smilies in text. At least I think you can do it this way! I am sometimes unsure whether I have extra features because I am a Moderator, but I am pretty sure I remember this option from when I was 'normal'.
