I'm looking for the marriage of William Nicholl and Beatrice or Bridget in the late 1920s, probably in New Jersey and possibly in Hackensack. All help greatly appreciated.
As an aside, being "hand-fed" with the British BMDs, just how easy is it to find on-line US BMDs? 'Cos so far they seem to be eluding me.
Peter

|nopity|No wonder I'm having trouble, when I can't even get MY surname right |oopsredfa It's William NichoLL

1930 Census, taken 2 April 1930
Bergen County, Hackensack, NJ

William, age 25, born England (also his parents), clothing store salesman, married 3 years
Beatrice, age 26, born Irish Free States (also her parents), no occupation
William, age 1 1/2, born New Jersey

They live at 166 Hudson Street, are renters ($31) and do not have a radio.

Will see if I can find anything else.

There is no index listed on ancestry as to New Jersey marriages at that point in time. Each state is different, has different rules, different things that are available on line. If it's anything like Massachusetts, you would have to contact the state bureau of vital statistics and give them the info you have and they will do a look up for you. At least you know when they got married. Do you know for sure that they married in NJ?

The appropriate web site to check out is

www.state.nj.us

They give the requirements to get a copy of the marriage certificate, and I am assuming someone there does lookups (they do in Boston). The Archives (Microfilm) only run from 1848 - 1878.

Sorry about that!

Hi Teri
Thanks for the info.. I've assumed that it was NJ based on the Census plus the fact that his brother was living there too and had married in Leonia. So, it's back to the good old days and I'll have to get up off my behind and do some legwork |laugh1|
Thanks again

Hello Peter,

William Nicholl was my grandfather and the William Nicholl that was 1 1/2 years of age in the 1930 census is my father. He is still living in Santa Rosa, California. William my grandfather was married to Bridget McCarthy (B. 17, Sep 1896 Skibbeeren, Co. Cork Ireland-D. 30 Aug 1985 San Luis Obispo, California, US) She was my favorite lady in the whole world so sweet and loving. She once told me that she was born Bridget but when she came to America she was working for some wealthy people on the East Coast taking care of their children and there was another Bridget in the house so they started calling her "B", which became Bea and then Beatrice, she always went by Beatrice after that. Bridget and William had four sons. William Peter (my father); Donald Alfred B. 27 May 1930 New York-D. 31 Dec 1978 Camarillo, California; James b. 27 Jun 1933-d. Dec 1972, (somewhere back east, he was the first of my Uncles to pass I remember the funeral and my Grandmothers grief); Robert Michael b 6 Aug 1936 New York-d. 9 Jun 1982 Los Angeles, California, (Uncle Bob has 3 children Bobby, Colleen and Steven I can get more info on them, I am in touch with Bobby) My father married Rose Elizabeth b. 17 Jan 1932 Des Moines, Iowa-d. 20 Jan 1962 they had my brother William Francis Nicholl b. 15 Jan 1960 Azusa, California - d. 25 Sep 2005 Wilton, CA and me Rosemary Nicholl. Well that ought to give you something to do for a bit. If there is anything else that you need to know about this branch of the Nicholl clan let me know, I will do what I can. My dad and I don't speak, but I understand that Cedric Norton is in touch with him. I don't know much about my grandfather. I heard he passed around the time I was born perhaps in 1963 or so? and I believe he passed in the UK possibly from Asthma? I heard from my dad that he had beed a house painter while he was a child. My Grandmother and Grandfather while they remained legally married didn't live together. I heard he had a gambling problem and was physically abusive to grandma. I also have family photos that I can forward if you like. This is my first time on this sight as you can see I spelled my last name incorrectly and I can't figure out how to change it. Look forward to hearing from you and exploring this sight.

Hi Rosemary,
The missing "L" must be a NichoLL thing, see my original post. Lovely to hear from you and I've received your e-mail.
Regards
Peter
