Hello
I don't know whether I'm posting this to the right forum or not but here goes.
I'm hoping that someone might know/or heard of William Edge who ran the Bleak House Gentlemen's Club from 1925 at his home 117 Sutton Road Mansfield. He is either my grandmother's uncle or cousin, I'm not quite sure.
He was born in Tansley, son of Isaac Edge. He was a farmer until he moved to Mansfield to become a coachman at the Swan Hotel. The licensee at that time was Mr John Charles Ringham. William became landlord of the Blue Boar Inn at Stockwell Gate until he opened the Bleak House Gentlemen's club. All of this information is from a newspaper clipping(undated) that my grandmother had.
Any information would be helpful as I am completely stuck with the Edge family now.

Also in house is George Edge, nephew, age 14, b Basley, Derbyshire (can’t find that place).

The census asctualy records that as 'Baslar' - which is surely Baslow. The 1861 census shows George as born Grindleford Bridge (a little bit to the north of Baslow) and living with grandparents (the Taylors).

Deb - you should be able to show any connection between your grandmother's family and the EDGE family by use of certficates, census returns and possibly wills. Whre was she from? Have you been able to obtain her birth certificate? Have you got her line back to a point where they appear in census returns? Was her maiden name also EDGE?

I think you may be in luck, here, Debtudor. I've just rung my Mum who is current Archivist of the Old Mansfield Society. The Society say they would like to pickle her brain as it's so useful, and when I started reading out your posting, she exclaimed, "Oh yes, Bill Edge!" The Old Mansfield Society hold a photo of Mr Edge, Coachman to the Swan, actually driving a coach in through the archway of the Swan Inn (still going on Church Street, although the courtyard was filled in many years ago) about 1900. My Mum then said, "He married a Miss Parsons, daughter of a builder." However this was just off the top of her head (!) - so don't bank on this one yet. My Mum says that she will send you a copy of the photo if you would like one (why do I think you might?) Best wishes, Penny

PS - My Mum has now had a hunt in the Archives for you and has come up with another photo - of Miss Parsons/Mrs Edge standing in the Swan Yard with Mrs Ringham. Hope this is a nice surprise to wake up to in Australia! By the way, my Mum had not heard of the Club at 117 Sutton Road, so we shall have to look into that.
Best wishes, Penny

This is so exciting!! Thank you very much and yes I would appreciate a copy of the photos.
My grandmother was Ellen Ethel Edge, born in Ashover. The rest of her siblings were born in Canada as the family had moved there for a couple of years. Three of her older sisters(including twins) are buried in Harrow, Ontario.
Thank you so much again.

Could you private message me with your address, and my Mum says that she will post you photocopies of the relevant archives. I see you are in Australia so a personal visit to the Archive is definitely out! Best wishes Penny

Thanks for the address, Deb. Have rung my Mum and she will post them off to you asap. Give it a couple of weeks for the snail mail, and if you haven't heard contact me. xxx Penny
