This lady was living in Paignton in 1926.
Her maiden name was Berry.
I would like to trace her or discover her history - any help gratefully received!
Given this FreeBMD entry
Births Jun 1899
Berry, *Winifred Emily, *, *Okehampton, *5b, 370, *
She ought to appear in the 1901 Census
Mark Hattam
And depending where Clyst Hydon actually is, the 1901 index doesn't have many options apart from this one ...
John Berry, 34, Dorset Lyme Regis, Devon, Clyst Hydon, Police Constable Devon County
Emily Berry, 31, Devon Torquay, Devon, Clyst Hydon
Daisy Berry, 6, Devon Southmolton, Devon, Clyst Hydon
Winifred Berry, 1Y 10M, Devon Sampford Courtney, Devon, Clyst Hydon,

Thank you so much - this could be her and her family. Clyst Hydon is not that far from Okehampton. What do the '5b' and '370' mean in your first reply (from the FreeBMD entry)?
Any ideas how I find out what happened to her later?

Volume is 5b and the page number 370. Using that information together with 1899 June quarter and Oakhampton it is possible to obtain a copy of the birth certificate for this person.

Sampford Courtenay is in Okehampton registration district and therefore the entry quoted could well be the person shown in the census entry. Clyst Hydon is NOT in Okehampton district, it is in St Thomas registration district-
Do not rely on maps for finding this sort of information, the registration districts can be very peculiar in the areas they cover and just because they look close doesn't mean they're in the same district. You will see from the above web page that some Devon places come under Somerset (Taunton) reg districts, some also come under Cornwall and vice versa.

Many thanks again - you can tell I'm a complete novice! Have been to the FreeBMD site now, and have (potentially) found all these people's births and John and Emily's marriage.
Point taken about using caution re. registration districts - but in this case I think the family may have moved between Winifred's birth, registered at Okehampton (Sampford Courtney is ok), and the 1901 Census, when they were living in Clyst Hydon.
Any ideas about what happened next? Are any further censuses available? And how do I find out about deaths post 1911? I wonder if the fact that John was a policeman may be helpful?

Only 1901 census available at present currently expect to wait some years before the Government will release the 1911 census. If you live near to London visit the Family Records Centre in Myddleton St, Islington birth, marriage and death records available to view up to about 2002 currently. Failing that you are looking at web sites like 1837online or Ancestry but these charge for information.
Not sure that the police connection will help much, depends on constabulary records. Speak to older relatives to see if you can piece together some of the background information.

Thank you Mark, Ron and Terry for your interest and help in this matter. Two days after tentatively posting my question I feel so much better informed, and will now visit the Family Record Centre and follow the threads from there. All the best, Carolynn
