Looking for info on NZ settlers

Hi
James Winepress and his wife Jane travelled to New Zealand in 1847 with their children Matthew, John, Ellen and Anne. They had a daughter Mary born in NZ. The family settled in Auckland. James was a Fencible.

Is their any census information or family details that I could look up on line please.

Sorry, no census information. NZ does not keep any census info after the Stats Dept has finished with it. Info in the Fencibles can be fouund. I'll have a poke about and see what I can find.

It is difficult to get information without going to the archives in Wellington or in your case Auckland. However next year (2009) stuff from the archives is going to come on line that might make things a lot easier. The is a lot of stuff on the Fencibles that can be just googled.

I'll do some rooting around in the BMDs next time I'm at the Library (Fri) and see what I can find there.

Hi, there is a probate record for a James Winepress, Howick (Auckland) 1893, on Archway. If you go to www.archway.archives.govt.nz and do a simple search, just type in the surname and you'll get two Winepress matches, one of them being James Winepress. You can e-mail the archives and give them your credit card number to obtain the record. It is $20NZ (about 7 pounds) to obtain the file. They are very helpful to deal with. When you e-mail them at the Auckland office, ask them to check if they have any other records for your Winepress family (it's an unusual name), as not all the catalogue is online yet.

It may also pay to check Papers Past, http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast, as there are 66 matches for 'Winepress'. I had a quick look and there looks like some interesting stories for this family.

It's interesting that there are NO listings in the telephone directory for this surname! www.whitepages.co.nz

Mr Winepress married a widow (Mary Moorfoot) of a fencible soldier named James Colemoss. In 1868 as far as I can see.

From my enquiries Mary appears to have been my father's mother's mother's mother.

I see that the surname Winepress doesn't appear to be a very common name here in New Zealand.

Thought I might offer the following info for you, as perhaps you will fiind these other people also tie up with your family tree.

I have taken this information from this website: http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/ so if there are any errors I am sorry.

You can purchase these Birth, Death and Marriage records for these people if you wish at the above website I have quoted.

Unfortunately currently in New Zealand you can only search for people whose birth occurred at least 100 years ago or stillbirth if registered at least 50 years ago; marriages and eventually civil unions that occurred 80 years ago and deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago or the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years ago. So the below information I have quoted is from me looking up from 01 January 1840 to current (which only displays records as per above), so you should try checking details further down the track perhaps as you may find other people added to this website.

Also F.Y.I. the registration number (which I have quoted for you for the below records) is unique to a registration within each life event type (i.e. birth, death, marriage) and is different to the folio number you may be familiar with on microfiche indexes available in libraries etc.
