Looking for one of my Grandad's brothers, who family rumour has it died in Detroit 1934 (just before the Social Services Death Records start!).

Born in 1884 Greenwich London,
1901 Census ,16 year old Carpenter,Camberwell,London .
190? moved to S.Wales and became a miner .
190? Emigrates to Canada,
1915 Joins Canadian Army, lies about his age and is posted to France,
where he is badly wounded in both legs by shrapnel, refuses to let them amputate one of his legs, returns to Canada, then America, possibly Detroit and dies 1934 ?.
It is sad that thanks to his attestation papers I know he was 5ft 5in,had a36ins chest, and blue eyes, and brown hair.
But I don't where he lived ,worked, died,or was buried.
Any help on this would be appreciated

Thanks
Paul Pengelly

Hi Paul

There is a Thomas H Pengelly, living as a boarder in the household of Tabitha Woodruff in the 1920 census. 458 14th Avenue, Detroit Ward 10, Wayne, Michigan

His details are

Thomas H Pengelly, boarder, age 34, single, immigration year 1907 Al(ien), born England, parents born England, occupation Warehouseman, Seed Warehouse

Now, in searching for this Thomas, I found him arriving Halifax, Nova Scotia and St John, New Brunswick on the ship Parisian in 1907 on the Canadian Passenger Lists.

The details are...

Thomas Pengelly, age 23, Miner, born England, final destinaton Detroit, Michigan.

Found the same Thomas on the 1910 census again living in the household of the Woodruff family, his occupation is Carpenter

Then found him on the Border Crossings from Canada to U.S in 1918

...arriving Detroit, Michigan, USA

In 1930, I cannot find Thomas at all but have found a Emery T Pengelly in Michigan...I believe that this is him (and that is only based on everything matching apart from the first name) ....so I have searched for an Emery (Emory) and haven't come up with anything at all.

None of this helps unfortunately with a death record but you could look at the RAOGK site for a volunteer in Detroit, Michigan who would go to the archives for you.

hope this helps and if you want images or more detailed information the let me know.

Best wishes

Yvonne

WOW !!!

Yvonne thank-you,thank-you,thank-you.
This looks to be my Thomas, the dates line up ,his middle name was Henry, the occupations ,carpenter and miner are correct ,he was single,
it all points to him being the right one.
It looks like he landed in Canada in 1907,
moved to Detroit straight away or by 1910,at least
back to Canada to enlist in army 1915
shipped to France injured in war
discharged back to Canada before 1918
back over the border to Detroit in 1918
living in Detroit during census in 1920.

That is so brilliant
There is no use of Emory/Emery in the family as far as I can see ?,but I will keep looking .
I will try for a look up in Detroit now that you have narrowed it down to an area ,and yes I would love any more info you have
Thanks again
Paul

Just a little aside, as I have no information for you: They probably heard Henry as Emery - the enumerators in the States back then were dealing with all sorts of accents, and it's unbelievable how I have found some of my ancestors on the census (e.g.: Vitale = Fedele). They simply wrote down what they heard.

Best of luck
Teri

Hi Paul

I have received your PM and I will send you the info...

I do agree with Teri as I have had experience of this with my irish relatives who went to New York and have seen many differing spellings where you can almost hear the irish accent |biggrin|

Well, I just have to add this info that I have just found on the Admittance manifest in 1918

Pengelly, Thomas
born London, England
age 33
Last residence, London, Ontario, Canada
In the US before - 1906 to Dec 1915 Detroit, Mich

5' 5", fresh complexion, Br(own) hair, Bl(ue) eyes

Remarks and Endorsements

Med. Cert 483 - Acute injury to left leg and deformity of toes.

I believe now that there is no doubt that this is your Thomas Pengelly!

Best wishes

Yvonne

Had'nt read the last 2 posts till just now ,but I had come to the same conclusions and was busy writing you a private note on that same subject!
Henry/Emrey, dooh!
Wish all the census records had Height/Eye colour/Hair colour/Complexion/Scars? -Like the Attestation, and Immigration papers did ,so much easier in establishing you have the right one .
Rather than is Thomas Henry Pengelly 1920 the same man as
Emery T Pengelly in 1930,?
if he was 5ft 5ins ,blue eyes ,brown hair fresh complexion in both ,yes I would say so.
Thanks for the help
Paul
