I have a problem in tracking the Hoott surname. My ancestors, Thomas Tidmarsh and Mary Hoott, married in Inkberrow in 1783. However, there appear to be deficiencies in the Inkberrow records from this period, or at least they are not recorded on IGI Family Search, so it is not possible at present to track Mary’s antecedents.
The name itself seems to have endless variants according to IGI – Hoot, Hoott, Hoote, Hout, Houts, Hawt, Hawght, Hought, Ought, etc., - but are these all the same surname??
Is it possibly a variant of Hood? Does it originate in the Low Countries, possibly Flanders?
Any assistance with this would be much appreciated!
