I'm trying to trace the parents of John Booth born in Sproston Cheshire about 1874 according to the 1881 Census.I know his Grandfather was Daniel Booth born 1827 at Holmes Chapel and his Grandmother was Mary (?Nee) born in Flash approx 1822.Daniel and Mary had 4 children Mary E. Booth born Holmes Chapel approx 1855, John Booth b.1857 (these 2 were living in Batley Yorks at the time of the 1881 census) Daniel Booth b. approx 1859 (I cannot trace him in the 1881 census) and Charlotte Booth b.approx 1867 and living at home.
So whatever happened to Daniel and who were the younger John Booth's parents??
I am very new to geneology and would value any help.

Hello Angie - welcome to Brit-Gen.
If you can track down young John's birth certificate, that should start you on the right road. There are a couple of possibilities that I have found:
John Cope Booth, Northwich District, September quarter 1873, volume 8a, page 267
John William Booth, Northwich District, December quarter 1875, volume 8a, page 277
The Northwich registration district covered Sproston and certificates may be ordered for £7 each from the GRO. Follow the links in the box on the right-hand side of their website (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/).
Good luck!

John Jnr's birth certificate will give the details of his parents. There are 2 John Booths registered in Northwich around the right time (Northwich dist covers Sproston)
Sep q 1873 John Cope Booth Northwich 8a 267
and Dec q 1875 John William Booth Northwich 8a 277
The 1873 one seems more likely from the age on the census.
You can order online through the GRO website (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/) at £7 per certificate

Thanks both for your quick response. I'm presuming that either John b. 1857 or Daniel b. 1859 could be the father or Mary E. his mother making John illegitimate. I found Mary working as a servant in Batley and presume that she followed her brother, John there as he is working as a railway Clerk at Batley Station prior to becoming station master at Dewsbury.
You could sit infront of the computer for ever!!!

If you cross check with www.cheshirebmd.org.uk you may be able to narrow down the birth even further as it gives the sub district for registration.
John Cope BOOTH Middlewich or
John W BOOTH Winsford
My instinct would be the Middlewich one, see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/sproston.html but you need to decide which is most likely.
You can order online from the GRO giving the references you have from the previous posts, or from the local register office by clicking on the reference field on the site as above. You can't use the GRO reference to order from the local office or vice versa.
Good luck, and do let us know how you get on.
Jean
