There is a Castle Dene in Devon but if you posted the census details we could look at it.

Only Abbey Dore listed so probably a lousy handwriting exhibition by the enumerator and/or bad guess by transcriber.

Only needed this: Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 1054; Folio 47; Page 39.

Definitely says Abbey Dene, but I think the write misheard and mistook it for Abbey Dore which is really close to the Welsh border. Tried to find Eliza and William in 1901 but couldn't as I am unfamiliar with area names. When searching Brady I used Brad* plus yob and Hereford. Could try looking for Frederick in 1901 or have you found them already?

I know it doesn't help much, but you are looking in the wrong county. The census page is in Barnet HerTfordshire, not HerEfordshire. As I say, not much help, Streetmap doesn't recognise Abbey Dene and though I lived in Barnet for a while, I don't recall that name at all.

Thanks for the input on this, the family is being very confusing for me, because they have had the name mis spelt twice before, its was recorded as Brady in Barnet, and some other unpronouncable name before,I live near Barnet now so do know the areas, but Abbey Dene is not here, perhaps thats been recorded wrong too,I have the family in some Census's but some are missing so probably mis spelt again, oh well plod on.|banghead|

I think the enumerator must have misread/heard the place name. The only one that is remotely similar in sound is Epping Green

Is that the family in the 1901 at RG13; Piece: 1313; Folio: 49; Page: 6 (with the surname as BRACEY)? (and possibly three of their children lodging at the previous house).

If it is, then with Eliza's birthplace as Hereford, Abbey Dore does seem reasonable as the meaning of the 1891 entry.

Regards
Barbara

May not help much but the village still exists and is nowadays spelled Abbeydore. It's a lovely little place overshadowed by an impressive abbey church. It is in what is known as the Golden Valley.

Oh many thanks for that, I will have a look and see if thats around.
