I have traced back to my 4x gt.grandfather, William KEMP, born in Mayfield abt 1776. He married Frances BUTTON in 1799 in Burwash. William and Frances lived in Mayfield and the 1851 census shows that William was a shoemaker. There were 5 children of this marriage that I know of - William, Elizabeth, Hannah (b.1807) Ann, Ruth, Richard (b.1818).

I am now trying to find William's parents. Can someone please tell me where I might find the baptism records for Mayfield? I looked on the LDS IGI index for Sussex but there is no mention of Mayfield parish. I am fairly new to genealogy and am not sure what other records may be available to help me in my search.

Many thanks,
Chris

1. East Sussex Records Office.
2. The Society of Genealogists library has transcriptions.
3. Film available through the Mormons - FHL BRITISH Film 1067249 Items 4-10

Thanks for your reply Peter. At the moment I am unable to get to either the East Sussex Records office or to the SOC in London, so I will try and find out how I would access the FHS British films that you mentioned. May I just ask how you came up with the film numbers, is there an online list of them somewhere please? I found a list online of the LDS English counties IGI and looked at the entries for Sussex, but Mayfield is not on it.
Thanks again for your help
Chris

"May I just ask how you came up with the film numbers"

From the main site, http://www.familysearch.org/ , follow the links to "Library" and then "Family History Library Catalog" (sic). Enter Mayfield as the place and take it from there. You'll want to check the film number anyway in case I got it wrong!

Then you'll have to track down your nearest FHC, phone them (easier said than done) to check the opening times, go round there, order the film, pay your money, go away and wait until it comes in. Then go back and look at the film.

Your local Family History Centre (FHC) may also be found on the familysearchsite
Click the library tag then the Family History Centers tag
or try

Thanks very much everyone for all your help, it's much appreciated. I've found where the nearest LHS library centre is and got their phone number. There's no opening times listed so I'll just keep phoning them until someone answers!

Hello Jill,

Thank you for posting the information about William Kemp for Scrapper. However, Scrapper has not been on the forum since 12 Augusr 2005 and may not see the message. :o

Hopefully, they will have email notifications enabled for when someone posts on their thread and it will bring them back.

Hello Jan,
gosh, is it really that long since I was last here? I'd rather given up on my Kemp line but thankfully I did have notification emails enabled so here I am again!

Jill,
thanks so much for replying. Since I last posted I have looked at the Mayfield PR film at my local LDS library and confirmed that William Kemp was NOT baptised in Mayfield. I know that Ticehurst is just a stone's throw away, so your William Kemp bap. 1776, son of Henry and Sarah looks very likely! I have just checked the IGI and there does seem to be a lot of records for Kemp's in Ticehurst, I need to go back and try to piece them together! I will pm you with my email address and hopefully we can exchange info.

Many thanks
Chris
