Whilst browsing a directory of Kent in 1847, I spotted these coastguards and thought I would list them in case anyone is looking for locations in the 1840s.

I'm afraid they only list the coastguard, not the family.

Lt. H. JESTON

..........and in case anyone is looking for records, don't forget TNA's catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/) which contains 1097 individual records covering most of the 19th century and the early bit of the 20th century.

In the word or phrase field, enter the surname of the person in whom you are interested, then AND coastguard (write the AND in capitals). For example: burgess AND coastguard
Leave the year range blank
In the department or series code enter - ADM29

There are a further 15 entries in the CS engagement books in ADM139 (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/searchresults.asp?fldLettercodeRef=ADM&fldClassRef=139&fldSearchNumber=164315&fldInvert=0&SearchInit=6)

If you are planning a trip to TNA and want to see records relating to coastguard generally, in the word or phrase field, enter coastguard then search. Most of the files are in ADM (Admiralty), but there are quite a few in MT (Transport Ministries), BT (Board of Trade), CUST (Board of Customs), etc.
