Hi All,
Trying to trace my husbans family for him and have got stuck on his X Great Grandfather - a John Cowey born abt 1865 according to 1901 census. Tried finding in 1881 and 1891 and it didn't seem to be the right person even though there are not many about. Just recieved marriage certificate of 1894 and have found his father is a John; both were miners. This is certainly not the 1881 entry as father was a William. Could some kind person check the 1871 census for a John Cowey born abt 1865 Durham/Pelton Fell/Belmont. Have looked an Ancestry and have discovered there is one for 1866 and a John G 1864, If anyone has access to this it would be appreciated to find out who these John's were living with.
Many thanks
Sarah

Brilliant - one down, one to go. Atleast this one has father as John, the same as the marriage certificate. Will check him out out on later census and see if he is the one.
thanks

Hi Sarah,
1871 Census. The John Cowey aged 5 was the son of William and Mary Cowey living in Sunderland Road, Carrville, Civil Parish of St. Giles.

Hi Smithy,
I appear to be looking at the same Cowey records as yourself! I'm Australian but I've also seen the info in the 1871 census and was quite excited by what I found. I believe John Gos's son John G is my great-great grandfather who immigrated to Australia around 1881 (and why he is not on the 1881 census?). My great-great grandfather's (John G) death cert states his parents as Robert and Esther Cowey, however, I have a hunch that Robert may be Esther's 2nd husband (and therefore John G's step father) as I believe the same Esther Cowey is listed in 1891 census but then as wife of Robert with son Robert H age 22 and daughter Esther M age 18 all living at the same address as she was in the 1871 census entry. There is no mention of John Gos or Robert or John G Cowey in the 1881 census but that could be because that's when we think John G came to Australia and both John Gos and Robert were mariners so could have been at sea? John Gos possibly died between the census dates of 1871 and 1891 and therefore Esther was free to marry again? Therefore, I'm primarily trying to find a birth and death record of John Gos Cowey, a marriage record of John Gos to Esther Small, a birth record of John G Cowey, and any record of his immigration to Australia (date, ship). Have you come across or have access to any of these documents? If you could contact me that would be greatly appreciated!! Have hit a brick wall!

Hmm! Things are not clear with this family!
I've found:
Marriage of Robert Hosbrough COWEY to Esther SMALL Sep Q 1859 GRO ref 10a 453
Census 1861: Esther COWEY 21 WIFE no husband or children @ 48 Henry St Bishopwearmouth, same house as Jane UDALE widow.
This is the strange bit!
Census 1871:
***John Go? COWEY age 31 Head
Esther COWEY age 31 wife
John G COWEY age 7 son
Robert H COWEY 2
Census 1881
Esther Cowey married 41
Robert H 12
Esther M 8
1891
Robert COWEY 53 master mariner
Esther COWEY 52
Robert Horsborough 22 COWEY
Esther Mary COWEY 18
Freebmd has birth regs for
John George COWEY Sep Q 1863
Robert Hosbrough COWEY Mar Q 1869
and Margaret Esther COWEY Mar Q 1865
also a death reg for Esther COWEY age 4 Dec Q 1869
Birth Esther Mary Cowey Sep 1872
Deaths Esther Cowey 56 Jun 1896
Marriages Esther May Cowey Sep 1899 to Thomas W BURDES (Sunderland Registrars site)
A possibility for Robert's death aged 59 Jun Q 1895.
The reason I've followed this is because I am interested in all mentions of the surname SMALL. If you send for the marriage certificate of Robert and Esther, I would expect you to find that her father was John SMALL with an occupation akin to 'iron moulder'. If so, do please confirm!
Hope this info helps anyway!

Hi Jan,
Have since found all the info you kindly referred to! Yes, very frustrating! Last week I ordered the marriage cert of Robert and Esther. I'm expecting to find John listed as Esther's father also as I came across what I think is the same family in both the 1841 and 51 census.
1841 (East Cross St Sunderland)
John Small (Head) moulder age 25
Mary (wife) age 25
Thomas (son) age 4
Esther (dau) age 1
1851 (32 Westwear St Sunderland)
John Small (Head) Iron moulder age 34
Mary E (wife) age 34
Thomas S (son) Solicitors office boy age 13
Esther (dau) Scholar age 11
Sarah J (dau) age 9
John (son) age 6
William (son) age 4
Mary (dau) age 1
Will (hopefully) confirm the info I receive when it arrives! Cheers!

Sorry it's taken soooooooooooooooooooooo long to reply but "Yes" - Esther Small's father was John Small (moulder) and her mother was Mary Esther (formerly Smith). At the time of Esther's birth 16/11/1839, they were living at George St Sunderland. Siblings listed in the 1851 census are: Thomas S 13, Sarah J 9, John 6, William 4, Mary 1. Esther was living at 28 Henry St at the time of her marriage to Robert Cowey, 11/9/1859.
I did come across a marriage index for Sarah Jane Small which may be Esther's sister. Jun quarter 1873 in Tynemouth V10b, P413 to either William Marchent Fannen or, interestingly, William Cowey. Robert Cowey had a younger brother William b ~1840. I have not purchased this record so I don't know whether the names are related or just a coincidence.
Cheers,
Summer.
