Hi All :)

I've think i might have hit a brick wall with my Barnes ancestors. I'm trying to double check something passed onto me by a distant relative.

What i do know is that when he married in 1885 he was 26 which makes his birthdate C1859. This is where i hit a brick wall as i have been passed a birth certificate for him for 20/05/1859 born at Poulton Cum Spittle workhouse only mothers names on certificate Catherine Barnes. On his marriage certificate has a fathers name as Thomas Barnes. How do i know this is the person i'm looking for. Can only find him on the 1891 and 1901 census nothing before that time but he may have been fighting when the 1881 census was done. Why can't i find him on the earlier ones.

What is his christian name? I can't find much searching under Catherine's name, but she may have married.

Because Catherine was in the workhouse when he was born its a possibility he didn't have a father and made Thomas up for is marriage cert.

Hi Janet and Sandy

His name is William Joseph Barnes. Only mother named on birth certificate. She could have well married later on. Just not sure really where to go next.
