Hi

Having found out that my ancestors ran this beer house, I have found many references. They ran it from the 16th Jan to 24th September 1878. The head of the household is listed in the 1879 Directory of London as beer retailer.

At the London Metropolitan Archives, there is a list of licensed victuallers records, listed by type of pub ie beer house, ale house, pub etc and they give the dates of license for each licensee. There are two registers, a ccalendar of licenses and register of licenses. The register is the most detailed. They give the addresses but dont always give the names of them.

I even found my ancestor in the rate books for March 1878 at the Gloucester Arms beer house.

But one question though, if it was a beer house, would the beer have been brewed on the premises or bought from a brewery?

My recollection of the Register (admittedly not a London one) is that it includes the name of the owner. Was the owner a brewery? My understanding is that 'beer house' refers mainly to the type of licence. This should also shown in the register.

Hi

I have a photocopy of the register.

The owner was a Mr Wood, 3 Trafalgar Square, Walworth. I need to research that address if you suspect it may be a brewery.

The licenses were renewed every March.

There is a list of Persons Licensed and it says "John Baker 1st March 1873" which appears to be when the beer house opened. Then it lists the names of the tranfers and renewals of licenses.
