My ancestor THOMAS HOLT b. 1818 left Rochdale, Lancashire in the north of England (sailing possibly from Liverpool ) and sailed to the States with wife MARY B. 1816 and daughters Rachel and Sarah sometime between 1842 and 1851. They appear on the 1851 CHARLESTON, South Carolina Census, St Philips.
They returned to England sometime after 1851, as they show up on the 1861 Census for Rochdale, Lancashire.
After 1861 THOMAS left his family in England and ( supposedly ? ) returned to the states where he ( supposedly ?) died. We all thought he was buried in Tamaqua Pennsylvania, but it appears he is not. The plot which was purchased is empty.
By 1871 MARY HOLT is, according to Census widowed.

Would someone be so kind as to see if they can find any information of the comings and goings of this family please, perhaps on ships passenger lists, especially Thomas.

His occupation in the United States was that of a GAS FITTER, I have references to Augusta Gas Light Co.

Very unlikely to be any British Passenger Lists for this period. See TNA's research guide on the subject of passenger lists (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=106)

They may well have emigrated with assistance under the Poor Law Amendment Act for which there are a lot of records in document class MH12 at TNA and these can prove very interesting, in some cases including the date and place of embarkation and name of ship. However, these records are only available at TNA and are recorded by place and year, there is no nominal index.

As an alternative, possibly someone in America may have access to records where the family disembarked?

Thanks Geoffers,
As I have no chance of being able to visit the TNA I was hoping perhaps that someone in America might have some information that would be of help,as you can see from my many postings on the subject of Thomas Holt, I am desperate.

Hi Tribi:

Anc**try has passenger lists which cover the period you are interested in, and a search turned up quite a few Thomas Holts arriving in the U.S. during those years.

I have the record for my own ancestor, who arrived in New York with his family in 1832, and it lists his age and occupation as well as the names and ages of his wife and children. I was wondering what Thomas' occupation would have been when he first left England. Also, were Rachel and Sarah both born in England and in what years?

I don't have a subscription but if no one else can help out we have free access at my local library and I'll be going there this coming weekend. I'd be happy to try to find Thomas and his family for you.

:)

Beejay thankyou so much for your kind offer. To check the details myself on ancestry I must upgrade my subscription which is quite expensive, but, if its the only way to get information I may just have to do that.

In 1841 Thomas gives his occupation as a Tin Plate Worker (so this is probably the given occupation when he left England )
In 1861 Slater ( he was probably working then for his father in law who was also a slater)

Rachel and Sarah were born in England, Rachel 1842 and Sarah in 1845.

I feel sure that when they went to the States they went because of some relation who was already out there.

regards
Tribi

That's a wonderful free website, but as far as I know their records start in 1892.

CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Colin

Hi Tribi:

I had a good look at the passenger lists at the library today and unfortunately I didn't find Thomas or his family. :(

There were a lot of Thomas Holts but they either had different wives/children than yours, or were a different age and occupation. One Thomas travelling alone was the right age but he was a labourer from Ireland.

Regarding your other post, are you still looking for Annie or Joshua Holt in Pennsylvania? Were they husband and wife and could they possibly be in the 1930 census?

:)

COLIN and BASHFORD ,thanks I'll take a look at the websites.

Thanks also BEEJAY,
I know the Holts were in Charleston as they show up on the 1850 Census there, so maybe there are no records around for the time they departed.

I don't know what relationship Annie and Joshua shared. When she died in 1950 a Joshua Holt took over the plot of land in Tamaqua, Oddfellows Cemetery (where we thought Thomas Holt was buried, but is not ). She died in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania at Orwigsburg Street. I even know that the undertaker was a Conrad Zizelmann whose ancestor John M. still runs the business today, but not who Annie was.

The plot of land in the cemetary was bought by an Ann Holt in 1866 so possibly Annie (or Ann E. was her daughter.

Hi Tribi,
Before you decide to make a subscription to Anc**try, give your local library a call and confirm whether there is free online access to all records (as there is in our area). You need to have a library card.
