First let me introduce myself, my name is Angela and I am trying to continue my mother's family history research. I became fascinated learning about my ancestors many years ago and over the past 5 years have been taking over the research after my mother was diagnosed with dementia. I have joined a group of "cousins" and we are all trying to learn more about our common ancestor, and have reached the proverbial brick wall |banghead|
Charles Short b. 18 Mar 1800 in Taunton, Somerset married Mary Stevenson b. 11 Apr 1803. They were married 10 Dec 1826 at Westminster, London.
He was at the time of his marriage an inkeeper at Limehouse London. Mary died in 1847 and at the death certificate of Mary Short, née Stevenson, it showed that her husband was present at the time. I have been told but not seen, that the Census of 1851 listed Charles and his children James, Elizabeth and Alfred living in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islandsand at the time of the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1877, Charles was listed as deceased of St Aubin’s, Jersey. I am eager to find his death information and wondered if anyone could possibly assist me in this.
Thank you.
Angela

Have a look at the records that are available as noted on GENUKI (http://user.itl.net/~glen/jersey.html).

Perhaps you could contact the Jersey Superintendent Registrar, to see what information they would be able to supply.

Good luck!

Hi Angela

Don't go to the Registrar yet as they will charge you for doing the lookups. You need an index entry to get a certificate and I will look this up for you in the next few days.

Not good news I'm afraid. Despite EC's wedding certificate saying Charles died in St Aubin (which is in the Parish of St Brealdes), I can find no entry in the index. I have also searched the other Parishes 1851 -1877 with nothing found.

Could he have died in England?

Stewart, thank you so much for looking at the records for me. You kindness is very much appreciated.
Well, I guess England may be a possibility... after all that is where he came from. Maybe he went back there for some reason and then died there - but where?
Thank you again for your help

Hi Angela

A search of Ancestry shows 2 Charles Short's who died between 1851 and 1877 and born around 1800. One was in Sturminster, Dorset and the other Greenwich in London. NB The database on which the searches are made is incomplete so don't depend on it 100%

Depending how flush you are(!) it might be worth sending for these 2 certificates.
