My 2nd Great-Grandfather shows up in the 1881 Census as being a convict inmate at Carisbrooke Prison IOW.
Anyone know where I could find out more about why he was being detained? Are prison records available anywhere?
Thanks
John

It's Parkhurst Prison!
Bearing that in mind, these research guide explain what records might be available:

Thanks for the pointers Peter, but can I ask why its Parkhurst not Carisbrooke...does that mean its Parkhurst, London, not actually on IOW?
I looked at the TNA research guides and the Parkhurst Records seem to end in 1863? I'll keep looking anyway,
Thanks

John,
Parkhurst Prison is on the Isle of Wight - not in London.
From GENUKI (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/IOW/Carisbrooke/Gaz1868.html):
Near Carisbrooke are the great Government prison or reformatory of Parkhurst, the Albany Barracks, founded in 1778, and the House of Industry for the island.

I have just found that the Prison has a Heritage Group (http://www.wightonline.co.uk/parkhurst-heritage/index.html), which may be able to provide further information for you.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for all your help. Hopefully I can find out what kind of naughty boy my 2nd Great Grandfather was!

You've probably already tried the Central Criminal Court. It's always worth doing because it's easy ;)
