In my family several of my ancestors have unusual middle names. I have learned that in many cases a child was given as a middle name the surname of a maternal ancestor. For example my maternal grandmother had Gilbert as a middle name and this had been the surname of her maternal grandmother. A similar thing had occured with my maternal great grandmother.

On my father's side my great grandfather had as a middle name, Tookey. I have not been able to trace any other Tookeys in the family but there was a Tookey family living in the same road at the time of his baptism. I have been told that the name of a godfather was often given as a middle name at baptism.

I hope these ideas may help some of you to puzzle out unexpected middle names in your research.
