I think I have found some information on my Great Great Uncle Zechariah Tolley who served with the South Staffordshire Regiment during the First World War.

I have found his war medals card which gives his details Private 38443 and the awards of the Victory and British medals. It think he survived the war however I am unable to confirm anymore details because of very little information on his medal card.

I know my relative Zechariah was born 1894 West Bromwich to Henry and Elizabeth Tolley.

Can anyone suggest how I could find out more information to confirm this is my relative?

Kind regards
Adrian

He doesn't appear in the Commonwealth War Graves, so he probably survived the war.

And since there is only the two birth entries on FreeBMD for this name (both indexed as Zachariah) since 1880 - and the first one was most likely his older brother as he died before yours was born in the same registration district - then you can be fairly confident that he is your fellow. Circumstantial of course.

You have a good reply on the War forum :) gee, those google spiders work fast. Apparently there is an indication on the card that another type of record is available.

Hi Christine,

Yes you were right about him being named after his younger brother who died very young.

I have found his war medals card which gives his details Private 38443 and the awards of the Victory and British medals Roll F/101B12 Page 1440. I think he must have survived the war however I am unable to confirm anymore details because of very little information on his medal card. No remarkes given on what happenend to him or any entry on date or theatre of war.

Also it has handwritten on his medal card SWB List F/17/1377 as Zachariah Tolly (without the e). This I have been told is the silver war badge and meant he was discharged from the Army because of sickness or wounds etc.

Can anyone help with what is written on his medal rolls I could then find out more information on his activities during the war and to confirm the personnal details.

Is anyone due to visit the Archive centre I would make a small contribution to the persons charity if anyone could help.

I currently live in Finland so its impossible for me to get to visit sites in the UK at present.

Adrian

Births Mar 1926
Tolley Zachariah Haycock W.Bromwich 6b 1306

Do you think that might be his son? If it is, the certificate would confirm that he survived the war and provide his occupation at the time (was he a regular?).

Hi Peter,

I am certain the Zachariah born in 1926 you mention is the nephew of Zachariah and I remember him well because I was raised by my Grandmother Ethel who was Zachariahs brother. I think he was named after his Uncle but I can't find any details of the other Zachariah ever marrying or having children.

I wonder if he died not long after the war?

Adrian

Hi,

Many thanks to your replys I'm very thankful. I have managed to obtain my Great Great Uncles SWB information. He was discharged from France due to wounds in 1919 (I think he must have been wounded towards the end of the war).

I just need to find out what became of him after the war (more research). I just can't find any details on his death but thats another story.

Adrian
