hi every one , please help if you can

my grandfather : ernest coles mm b.1893 d.1975
served wwi with the devonshire regiment - i have info on this period
served as a batman after 1922 -1926
we do not know in what regiment or were .
family rumours talk of india .
he was married in 1926 in grimsby and no longer in the military ,maybe !

he aslo served in ww2 and was stationed near sheffield about 1942-
we have no knowledge of what regiment etc .

any clues as to were to look

i have been told that a lot of 2nd ww records were destroyed is this true ?
