Hi, I am having great difficulty in trying to find any information about my great-gandfathers soap works in Manchester.
Let me tell you what info I have.
Browns soap works in 29 Back Piccadilly Manchester, 4 Newton Street and Grosvener Street Newton Heath. Awarded silver medal in 1877 for 'WHITE WINDSOR SOAP'. After g.grandad died the works were presumably passed on to his two sons Robert and Fred Collins Brown (my grandad). There is then some big mystery (accident of some kind) and the company then passed on to soley Robert. When my grandad died, my mother was contacted by Cussons and passed on to them everything my grandad had (books, recipes etc) for absolutely nothing. Would dearly love to find the story behind all of this. CAN YOU HELP PLEASE?

It is possible that the Museum of Science and Industry has some information www.msim.org.uk (http://www.msim.org.uk)
Some of their collections are on-line; I've had a quick look but cannot find anything, but they have more.....!
I had some very useful information about a small company from them some time ago, so it may be worth contacting them directly.
