Hi

Courtesy of FamilySearch record search which has Bishops Transcripts for Durham.

My ancestor was William Stewart born in 1800 in St Helen Auckland. His father was John Stewart. Stewart is a Scottish name so I was determined to find the connection, even with such a common name. I had always suspected Scottish ancestry with that line, but it was just a logical minded theory that turned out to be true. Proving my mind is logical lol

Many Scots came to North England in the 1750s and 1760s after farming tenant disagreements. And I couldnt find any reference to John before his marriage in 1789. He was a widower.

William's December 1800 baptism says "Son Of John Stewart, skinner, a native of Selkirk, Scotland, and Patience his wife, a native of this parish". I nearly died of triumph. |jumphappy

Excellent news, Ben! |hug|

It just shows how those extra remarks made in Parish Records and Bishops Transcripts can pay dividends.

Well done, Ben! Now you can have fun with the Scottish records which go back to 1553 (or thereabouts).

John Stewart died in 1815 aged 80 (or thereabouts). His first son was called James and his first daughter was called Isabella.

I want to know roughly when he left Scotland and moved to Northern England.

There was a John Stewart, twin brother of a James, born in 1738 in Selkirk. I even know the time of birth as it says "About 10:30 at night". Wow. His parents was called James Stewart and Isabella Stewart formerly Dickson.

Scottish people had that traditional family naming pattern where the eldest son and daughter were named after the fathers or mothers parents. That even went for Scots living in England. Johns wife was English.
