cannot seem to pinpoint a death for him but this looks promising

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?r=140325322&d=bmd_1218534691

as he was born and lived in Croydon

I have him born Jun 1859 , so the age looks right and he is shown as deceased on the wedding certificate for my grandmother

was looking for second opinions before biting the bullet and ordering the cert to confirm

shown as aged 42 on the 1901 census , living at 5 Selhurst New Road , so not a great distance from Camberwell

The age fits. No reason why he didn't move about between censuses. He could have been run over by a tram in the Camberwell reg. district.
Sometimes you have to order a doubtful cert in order to eliminate a possibility.
If you think it might be him then go ahead.
