I posted a query on the Black Sheep forum hoping to find a newspaper report of my gggrandfather's suicide. There is a possibility that it might have been reported in the Andover Advertiser.

Details are:

Charles Neave, gamekeeper (or Ag Lab) of Nine Mile Water Farm Cottages, Broughton, Hants.
Died by hanging on 20 July 1900.
Inquest held by Bernard Harfield, Coroner for Hampshire, 21 July 1900.

Does anyone have access to the Advertiser's archives?

Any help would be appreciated.

Great news - I received an email from a delightful young lady at the Andover Library who attached a copy of the Andover Advertiser report on great-great Grandad Charles' inquest. It makes very sad reading but confirms the story handed down as family lore.

One heart-warming touch. The poor old chap took the trouble to feed his pheasants before picking up his rope and taking that last walk up the hill...

Thanks for your help.

PS: This is my second attempt at this message - if it turns up twice, I apologise.

So pleased for you, even if it did make sad reading. It just goes to show that if you don't ask you don't get!

I'm glad you've had such a helpful response. My own experiences with local studies libraries have all been good, too, if they have the information, so I always give it a try if it's a local issue.
