I am looking for a detailed map of Somerset that preferably I can print from the internet. I have googled 'map of Somerset' but the only detailed maps are the movable ones. Does anyone know where I can get a good map of Somerset? I would like to be able to have it by my computer when I'm researching in order to see where my relatives were living and how close they were to each other.

Thanks

Calliope, Have you tried the DSFHS - Dorset/Somerset FHS. They may have downloadable maps. There is one here http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/maps/os62htm/allsom.htm. You may have to enlarge it or did you want a colour modern?

And this one http://www.somersetguide.co.uk/maps/somerset-map.htm

You might also find something in Parish Chest (http://www.parishchest.com/shop/index.php?cmd=listlinkeditems&cat=D2902&breadcrumb=Maps:Somerset). ;)

Thank you for the additional websites. I will have a look at these. I'm looking for something similar to a provincial road map, Vanessa. I may try my local library also as I know they have a small section on world maps.

Thank you again for your usual helpfulness, Vanessa and Jan :).

Hi Calliope,

I know you only asked for Somerset, but I have an old (2000) Ordnance Survey Road Atlas of Great Britain, which might be the sort of thing you're looking for. The scale is 3 miles to the inch, which seems to show most villages and hamlets. It also has a spiral binding, which means that you can lay it flat at any page.

I checked a couple of Canadian online booksellers (A**zon. ca and Ch**ters) and while they don't seem to carry the OS version, they do have the AA Big Road Atlas Britain 2008, which looks very similar and sells for just under $20. (One site has it in stock, while the other shows 2-3 week availabilty.)

Alternatively, you could check your local bookstore for Michelin (or similar) road maps, although these may be at a smaller scale (at least the ones sold here).

Hope this helps -

Tim

Thanks Tim for the great suggestion :)! I don't know why I didn't think of this myself since I'm in C******* once a week anyway! I've checked online as you suggested and have seen some good prospects.
