I am having difficulty tracing a birth for Rose Emily Smith born in Hilton Huntingdonshire.
I've paid the National Archives to receive a copy for 75 Craven Park Road, Willesden and it shows that she was 27 in 1911, so I guess she was born approx 1884.
However, am I right in thinking this may not have been her maiden name?
Assuming it was her maiden name could someone pls look up a birth for her?
Many thanks
Assuming she was born around 1884 in Huntingdonshire, I could find no trace of a birth registration searching a couple of years either side which fits.

It depends upon whether or not marital status is indicated on your copy of the 1911 census.
However, I have found this:
Rose Emily ASHLEY, Huntingdon District, March Q 1884, volume 3b, page 269 (Huntingdon district covers Hilton)
As you say - she may be married or widowed etc and have been called something completely different at birth!
Mark
Edit: I was just off to see if I could find a Smith marriage to a Rose Emily when I spotted Jans post :)

Sorry !!! My mistake - on the 1911 census she is shown as single - sorry for the confusion - I think I've got tired eyes!!!!

I had had a look at the GRO for a birth for a Rose (Emily) Smith covered by Huntingdon District but, like Mark, I have not found one.
There are a couple of Rose Emily Smiths registered about the right time, but thay are in London.
Have you found her in previous censuses? Does it say Hilton as her birth place in those?

No I cant find her in previous censuses - all I have that's concrete with her shown is the copy of the 1911 census and my Grandad's birth cert. Turning out to be a mystery

I have had a look at 1891 and 1901 but can see no Rose Smith as born in Hilton, although there are a couple for Huntingdonshire.

Just had a thought...
Did Rose ever marry? If so, was her father's name on her marriage certificate?

I don't know if she married but thats a good idea! I could look to see if she did marry, that would certainly help to have her father's name. Another thing I don't understand, if she was born in a tiny village like Hilton about 1884, how did she end up working in London? I thought they didn't move far in those days?

If there was no work locally, then people used to travel.
There are many reasons as to how she may have ended up in London:
She may have been in service locally and the family moved
Word of mouth round the village for servants wanted by a family where one of the village girls was already employed
A "social network" of contacts in the village
Also, if she was "on the parish" the Parish Guardians may have found a position for her through their own contacts
She may have followed a chap ;)
The possibilites are endless...

I didn't realise there were so many possibilities - it's certainly given me something to think about. Thanks for your help Jan :D

I've just found one possible - in 1912, a few months after she gave birth to my Grandad (illegit) in Willesden (where she was working, living & had my Grandad) to William Orbell - if I order the marriage cert will it show her birth place? It may not even be the right marriage

It will not show her place of birth, only where she was living at the time of her marriage - plus her age, with any luck!
For information that can be found on certificates, have a look at Barbara's certificate website (http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm).
