Check out HM Prisons research site (http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/resourcecentre/research/)
Not sure if they will help you without you having more information.

There should be a death certificate which will involve a search of the GRO index - OR -
His papers should be held at TNA and capital offences are amongst those seachable on their catalogue (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp).
In the word or phrase field, enter - surname AND murder
In case the offence was earlier, try restricting the year range to 1951 to 1990
Leave the department or series code blank at the moment.
Then search.
You are unlikely to get lots of hits, bu in case you do, the files which are likely to be of use will have probably have one of the following class prefixes:
CRIM (Files of the Central Criminal Court)
PCOM (Files of the Police Commissioner)
MEPO (Files of the Metropolotan Police)
ASSI (Assize Court files)
DPP (Files of the Director of Public Prosecutions)
If you get stuck and don't want to correspong publicly about this, please feel free to send me a priabte message and I'll see of I can point you in the right direction.
