hi everyone|angel|,

let me start by introducing myself, my name is Dawn, from Cardiff and hopefully by posting threads in different rooms my chances of finding my grandparent will take me that one step closer to finding them? can anybody help ?

my grandmothers name :- EMILY LOUISE BROWN formerly GRIFFIN she lived in MEREDITH ROAD CARDIFF.

my grandfathers name :- WILLIAM GIBB BROWN also lived at MEREDITH ROAD CARDIFF.. however he was away on war service in the far east

my father RAYMOND:- born 1944 in Cardiff formally known then as the LODGE until it was taken over by the NHS

kind regards

Any ideas about where Emily came from Dawn?
I guess she was from Cardiff or the area.
On FreeBMD, I found one possible Emily for you -

Emily L Griffin, birth registered September quarter, 1917 in Cardiff.
Reference number volume 11a page 596
Mothers maiden name Evans

No idea if any of that rings a bell with you? Of course, there are other Emily Griffins registered earlier than that and probably later ones too. But 1917 would seem a fair birth date for this Emily to have a son in 1944....

Someone with access to a pay site may be able to provide you with the marriage details for William and Emily with a bit of luck :)

It is only a possibility Dawn.... Unless you know that the surname Evans was connected to your grandmothers family, then it would probably be a shot in the dark (and possibly a big miss as well as a waste of the £7 it will cost for the certificate)

What we really need to do is locate the marriage of Emily and William. The problem there is that the marriage would have taken place probably in the 1930s or early 40s and that period is not yet covered by the FreeBMD records. So it is a case of looking through the pay site records. Hopefully someone may be able to locate the marriage and then it is a case of buying the certificate (they cost £7) and seeing what details that supplies.
It should provide the fathers name for both William and Emily, as well as their occupations. Sometimes, other useful details are found - witnesses are often related to the bride and/or groom, it may list a father as deceased which can be a useful indicator for some things etc.

Hi Dawn

Looks like Procat has found the marriage registration of Emily and Willliam - certainly looks a good match to me. Let us know how you get on if you decide to purchase the marriage certificate, then with the information on that ie. fathers name and occupation it will give you a checking point if you then decide to go ahead and purchase the birth certificate for Emily L Griffin that Mark found the registration for.
