My great grand uncle Alfred Burrows , born St Albans Herts in 1857 , turns up on the 1881 census as a convict in HMP Princeton. I have been unable to find out why he was there and what subsequently happened to him . I would appreciate any advice . John

And Annie posted a link to some information on the Devon Archives site which in turn points to the National Archves research guides and mentions major relevant record series at the National Archives .

I really don't think there is any advice other than what has already been posted.
